Hiring this contractor was one of the biggest mistakes I have ever made. I hired him to retile and renovate a bathroom and it turned into a two month nightmare. This bathroom remodel started off as an $1800 job. Dennis Matthews, the owner and contractor said he was eager to do the job. Through our initial meeting and correspondence he was was friendly and helpful. He showed up on day one and started doing some demo with a worker he brought. A couple hours into the job he explained how he suddenly needed to raise the price thousands of dollars but he would do a more substantial renovation. (I later found it peculiar that he didn't show up with a contract to sign until after he raised the price.) The same day his worker knocked a hole into my bedroom, knocked a hole my adjoining closet and made a huge spark taking a light fixture out, blowing the dimmer switch. Dennis tries to up sell me on ways to repair the damage. I dont want to spend the time to go into every detail but suffice it to say this man was unstable, prone to outbursts, and would pry into my personal information. For instance, in the case of the dimmer switch he blew, Dennis tried to replace it with a scratched up piece of trash he had in the back of his truck and literally yelled about it several times, without me even bringing it up, how my dimmer was worth nothing and he was replacing it with a $70 dimmer. This was the time I started coming to realize I was dealing with a mentally unstable person. Every day having this man in my apartment was stressful. He'd come late, he'd leave early. He almost never do what he said he was going to do. He would talk about his twenty years of experience but would install wall framing that was not straight and try to brace the framing to temporary installations on the walls of my neighbors adjoining apt. He'd yell at me when I tried to talk about details of the job and say how He didn't even have a minute to discuss details and then go smoke cigarettes. After he completely bumbled the plumbing and nothing was where it needed to be or working properly, he shook me down for more money. The next week he ultimately packed up all his tools with no warning when I only owed him a couple hundred bucks and left the job completely in shambles. The only thing worse than the work he didn't complete was the work he did. I've never in my life seen such bad tiling and grouting. He put in brand new walls so the tile would be straight. The new walls were not straight at all. The spacing was uneven, the edges were jagged uneven and didnt match. The grout was such an unbelievable mess that looked like a 3 year old had done it. If you ever hear the name Dennis Matthews from New City NY or DLC Contracting, run away as fast as you can!
Description of Work: Worst experience ever with a psychopath contractor that left the job unfinished with terrible quality of what he did finish.
