Last summer a strip at the bottom began peeling off, and I asked Phelps to repair it. In July one of the owners came by and said they would put a new strip on. After numerous calls and emails, in November, four months later, one of their workers came by and covered the loose strip. The work was done thoroughly and it looks well done.
In sum, Phelps seems to do good work and stands behind their work. However, they aren't prompt and miss their own deadlines.
I would hire them again and recommend them to others, with this caveat.
After not contacting me to schedule the work like the owner said he would, I contacted him and he sent over one of his workers. When the worker arrived he told me there was no need to remove the shingles and that he and the owner had disagreed in the past about this. He just replaced the flashing and never removed a single shingle to look for the leak. He was there under two hours, did a fraction of the work and still wanted the full amount of the quote. As long as the roof was repaired, I was fine with this. The worker advised me to call him is there were any additional problems.
Every time it rained after this there were leaks. He did show up a couple times and put some silicone here and there, however, he rarely answered his phone or returned messages and wouldn't give me a time he was coming over so I could arrange to be home and monitor what he was doing. Eventually, he stopped returning calls all together and the problem persisted.
I called the owner back at this point and explained the problem. He basically said that he did everything he said he would and any other problems would be at an additional cost. I don't agree with that assessment. I brought them in to fix a porch leak. The owner recommended the above repair. First of all, his worker didn't do what the owner said and take up the shingles and look for the leak. And secondly, replacing the flashing didn't fix the leak. I shouldn't have to pay extra because his worker didn't do the quoted work or that the owner's repair didn't solve the problem. If the roof is still leaking after the repair, in my opinion you didn't fix the problem which you were brought in to do.
I understand that identifying and fixing roof leaks is often problematic, and can require several attempts to get things right. However, Phelps and his employee didn't and quot;work with meand quot;; they didn't give any indication that they cared that their failed and quot;solutionand quot; didn't work; and then they simply ignored me. For this they received $950 that they didn't honestly earn. This has already cost them one full roofing job my father was soliciting bids for, a job which will cost in the range of $7000-$8000. There was no way my father would even call Phelps for a quote after their unprofessionalism.
