The circulator pump of my heating system broke down. I determined that it needed a new "coupling." I used an Internet service to give me the name of a plumbing contractor who could make the repair. Knight & Day Heating Service was the first reference received. I called, reported the problem and the cause and made an appointment for the plumber to fix it. When he arrived, he immediately verified that my evaluation of the problem and cause was correct and replaced the coupling. He wrote out a bill and I paid it. He was here and gone in less than 30 minutes. I was charged $75 to replace the coupling (I found out later that the coupling cost less than $10) and a $95 diagnostic fee, plus tax. The $95 diagnostic fee was outrageous and a rip-off because he verified my diagnosis with one look at the pump.
