this all came this way and they really dragged their feet when we asked them to do it the right way. it took them a very long time to come back out and remove the faulty stove and tile pad and bring us the new one. meanwhile the stove pipe leaked horribly, warping the wooden floor and the ceiling has ugly water stains.
needless to say, sometimes things go wrong and that's when you find out how good of a service provider someone is.
we didn't even want to bother asking them to replace the ruined ceiling or floor, just finish the only job you were asked to do correctly.
their rationale was that the roofing was done incorrectly and it should be rolled roofing instead of shingles and you could tell from looking at it.
well, then maybe you, as a installer should have warned me that it was going to leak before you cut a hole in the roof and that i should have the roof corrected???? very poor service and will never use them again.
have since gotten the roof redone, but would have done the two things in reverse if they had bothered to mention it.
The recommendation was for a slightly smaller stove, the brand new model, Jotul F400 Castine. We chose the 70k BTU Oslo over the 55k BTU Castine. The Oslo provided more heat for winter power outage heating, it had a side door for loading wood and it had already been in production for a long time.
If we had use the Castine, without a side loading door and with its smaller size, we could have avoided the cost of rebuilding the hearth. I mention this to show that Men at Work's original recommendation would have been easier and cheaper to install.
There were zero problems during the installation. Everything that had been measured and built (mantel heat shield, expanded hearth, etc.) fit perfectly. The Jotul accessories were needed to comply with Jotul's safety rules for this installation and everything, again, worked out perfectly.
We have had zero problems with this stove since it was installed. Some multiple of the cost of this stove and its installation has been saved by reducing our oil usage. We have heated our house (2800 s.f. colonial) during several multi-day power outages from storms. We have even used aluminum pans inside cast iron pots to do some and quot;cookingand quot; during those outages.
A neighbor on our street had a chimney fire a few years ago. A relative in Quebec lost their house to a chimney fire just last year, despite their years of experience with wood heat. We have an excellent stove, with an excellent and safe installation. As long as we burn good dry wood and get the chimney cleaned annually, I feel we have achieved the safest possible situation for using a wood burning appliance.
I respect Men at Work's concern for safe and effective installations and highly recommend them. While visiting other homes, I've seen many wood stove installations that look unsafe. Sometimes a hearth is too small to catch falling embers when a stove door opens. Maybe combustibles are too close and heat shields were not used. I know that those installations were not done by the professionals at Men at Work Chimney Sweeps.
Ward and his helper arrived on schedule and removed 2 existing fireplaces that were steel heatalator type fireplaces original to the home (1964). They were rusted and deteriorated to the point that the house filled with smoke when we tried to have a fire. The old ceramic chimney liners were failing and had partially blocked ne of the fireplace flues. They used a plasma cutter to remove the old fireplaces. They installed new chimney liners and built new brick fireplaces - which look beautiful. When they finished the firplaces and their chimneys, they also relined our gas boiler and water heater chimney complete with rain cap.
They cleaned up at the end of each day and left our home cleaner than when they started. They were wonderful, personable and extremely professional.
I am more than satisfied with the quality and professionalism that Men at Work brings to the job with them. They are an A-1 operation!!!!
Their price was reasonable. He came late and he called and informed me that he would be coming late. I liked that. He came and had all the things. He knew what he was talking about. He did the work. Since then there was heavy rainstorms and everything he did, held up. He was professional and knowledgeable. He was very thorough. They were good and reasonable. His responsiveness was excellent. I would use them in the future.
