The first meeting with the owner William Renella went very well. He stated outlined his plan on what he would do and followed up the next day with an email stating everything we had discussed. That was the last good thing he did. I asked him to please follow up with a contract. Once I got the contract, I signed it and mailed it to him with half payment upfront as agreed. After a week or so of not hearing from him, I called to find out when he could start. He stated he was extremely busy due to the weather and could not start for another 3 weeks. 3 weeks later he finally did start. He arrived in the morning and had finished by late morning, maybe 3 hours later and solicited the final payment from my wife before the job had even been completed. When I returned home later that evening I was horrified by the job he had done. In the contract he stated he would remove all the rocks, grade filling in low spots, taking down the high spots, seed and top with penn mulch. What he did was a poor grading job with dips, mounds and hard drops, may rocks and sticks left and hay (not even straw) instead of penn mulch. Several areas weren't even seeded but he covered them with hay to hide that lack of seed. The areas he drove his tractor onto my lawn were rutted up and he didn't bother to fill them back in, again only covering it with hay. I called him that evening to let him know that I was not satisfied and to please call me back. After several hours, I called him again to let him know that I had stopped payment on the final check and to please call me so we could discuss how to fix the situation. 6AM the next morning he called me back. I told him my concerns to which he made numerous excuses. I asked him to please stop by so I could point out my concerns. Again,stating he was extremely busy, he agreed to stop by in 3 days to discuss. 3 days later, he never showed up. He did however send an email stating he would knock $125 off the final bill. This, of course, was not satisfactory to me. A few says later I noticed the mulch around one of my trees had bee dug up. I grabbed a rake and found this was where he had burred all the rocks he had removed from the lawn during grading. There was another area he stated he got his machine stuck (in an area he wasn't supposed to be in) that I suspect I'll find some more of the rocks he removed from the lawn. A few weeks later, some of the grass is coming up, but there are some large spots that it is obvious he never seeded and other that have very poor coverage. I am at this point debating whether or not to sue him for the initial $600 down payment as I am going to have to redo pretty much everything he did plus repair the areas he buried rocks.
