This is was my first job and Anthony is a neighbor who who did work for a camp that I'm connected to. My front porch was sagging and the roof had water damage that over the years created damage to the footings and floor. Anthony was to support the floor, jack up the sag and replace a post and fix the roof, so it was level with a pitch and with overhangs so water would be away from the porch. We had a verbal agreement, he provided no contract or drawings. Rather than replace the existing roof and some rotted wood, he framed a new roof over the old one. He created a soffit over the front but not over the sides. When I asked about it he said it couldn't be done. He said that they weren't there before so he wasn't going to add it on. He left the existing roof and rotted wood and built over the top making the top level without jacking it up from the center underneath. So finishing now underneath still has a sag and is unfinished. I pushed the issue for him to add side overhangs using a box soffit. This would require for him to go back and peel away shingles and add to the roof. He demanded money to pay his guys for working that week and against my brothers advice I gave him a partial payment in good faith that I would pay the balance and he would show up in the morning to finish the job. Well he showed up and took his tools and left stating that he wouldn't do anymore work unless he was paid in full. He was unprofessional and stated he didn't trust that I would pay him the rest of the money, he made a rude comment and shut the window. He left the job completely unfinished. They didn't put back on the shingles to the house or put on flashing. He left the post(not made with a 6x6 but 2 2x6) uncovered and bare. He then stated that painting or siding the job was not part of our original agreement either. There was really nothing specified in detail in the original agreement. This is what I learned. Get it in writing and have it drawn out. I don't think I have much recourse except to find someone to finish an unsatisfactory job.
