While Darren seemed like a good person and had good ideas and suggestions, the workmanship was poor. We finally ended up letting him go - he was more than 80% over budget (he only charges for labor; you purchase the supplies) and had only completed about 70% of the job. Subway tile that he installed is not level, and he didn't cap the cut ends or use bullnose tiles for the edges, so they are uneven and the cut edges are exposed, which means water will be absorbed. He topped the shower with unfinished wood, which will absorb water. The grout between the subway tile was cracking within days of being installed. He ruined the shower floor tile because it should have been sealed before he grouted it, so the grout stained it permanently. The shower door supports are not straight, so the door sags, which will most likely cause problems down the road. He used DAP instead of grout on the bathroom floor tile, which is not the appropriate product, and then dripped it all over the carpet outside the bedroom, permanently staining it. New toilet did not stop running (we fixed that) and pipes are now banging in the walls every time toilets flush or water runs anywhere in the house. There were drywall screws all over the driveway, causing a tire puncture, and the crew threw mortar or grout water, not sure which, off the side of my deck onto flower beds, which hardened when it dried. Not sure what will happen there once the growing season starts. Even his drywall seams are awful - we have to redo that as well. Overall, the mistakes were piling up and it became too much, so I told him I couldn't let him continue. He didn't offer to fix the mistakes, he didn't over any money back. He just left - left us with an incomplete and unusable bathroom (cabinets weren't installed, sink wasn't installed, windows still need to be replaced, tile wasn't finished or sealed so shower can't be used). We've had several other contractors in to get finishing bids, and each time we let them walk in and tell us what they saw, without telling them anything ahead of time. Every one of them has said he did horrible work and that we were cheated. It's very disheartening to know that we will be basically paying for this bathroom remodel twice, and the contractor just didn't care enough to offer remedy.
