The work went well. In 2011 the apartment was vacant so I gave them the keys and they did everything unsupervised. The work was done perfectly and on time. In 2017 they did a very good (but not perfect) job. There are a few straight black lines on the floor (machine malfunction?) - but they aren't really noticeable. Although the job was supposed to take three days it took four days because they got off to a late start on the first day. Since my job was small, the crew went to multiple sites each day and they spent more time than anticipated on the first leg. Not a big deal. The office staff is great! The estimate was on time and the office emailed the evening before each day to tell us when the crew would arrive. The workers were friendly and professional. They hauled away the old carpet and did a great job removing the dust that is generated when you sand floors. I would use Duffy's again and have recommended them to others.

They were actually early for the job! The house was empty and the work was done after a new paint job and before moving in.
It was a two day process and the floors looked beautiful after they were done. I didn't go to check it out until 48 hours after the work was done, even though you can walk on the floor after 24 hours. But I wanted to give it time to set more. And we had the work done a full 10 days before the movers came. The only concern my boyfriend had was that the color of the toe-molding didn't exactly match the color of the floor BUT, the contract did not call for the molding to be polyurethaned which might have been part of it, and new molding is not 70+ year old oak so it is going to stain somewhat differently.
I dealt with Caroline at the office. She was always easy to contact by phone or e-mail. Responses to questions were very quick. Duffy's was recommended by the agent who sold us the house and who is also a friend of mine. They did her floors and she was very satisfied. I would use them again.
BTW - new paint job was not affected except for some wood dust here and there which was easy to sweep off and then wipe down.

We had our kitchen completely renovated last winter. Our contractor used Duffy Floor Services as a subcontractor to install a pre-finished oak floor in the kitchen. We loved the new kitchen and asked Brendan to refinish the floors in the rest of the apartment which had not been resurfaced in many years (if ever). He came and measured the rooms and showed us the color options. At the end of July, we handed Brendan the keys and left for a two week vacation.
When we returned, we walked into a spotless apartment with new floors. They did a wonderful clean-up and the furniture was dust-free. The floor is somewhat lighter than before and the wood grain with the satin finish is beautiful. Our neighbor stopped by and was very impressed to see what a difference a new floor makes.

The service seemed okay, but it was not fully polished. Their work seemed unfinished.

He was extremely courteous, thorough, meticulous, and did an amazing job. My floors are beautiful and all my neighboors agree with me. They are very quiet workers and I can't recommend them highly enough.

Brendan, the owner, came to the house and give us a quote of $1000 for the services listed above, which was not the lowest quote we got but he seemed nice, and confident about the job. We were in the process of refinishing the woodwork and most of the baseboards had been removed in the process (to be reinstalled after the floor was done). The crew was a little late the first day, but got right to work. About two hours later my husband went to check on the progress and found that "repairs" were being made all around the room that involved ripping up the original parquet and putting in new wood. Beyond not wanting this work done, the new wood prevented the old woodwork from fitting back into place. The first response of the worker was that "we always build the floor out to within such and such of the wall." and "You can just put the woodwork on top." Needless to say these were not options we were interested in, so we had them take new wood out. When asked if any wood had been removed, a worker said "no," which turned out to be false. By the time this misinformation had been cleared up, the original pieces had been thrown out, ultimately creating more work for Duffy's. If they had simply owned up to the fact that they removed parts of our floor, a lot of the following problems would have been avoided and everyone could ended up satisfied. To make a long - very long - story short, the rest of the floor got finished without proper repairs. Instead they laid a patchwork of woods stained, sanded and finished different from the rest of the floor and installed after the floor was finished. A couple larger gaps were simply filled in with brown caulk! It was a real shame too, because the work we'd ASKED for was very nice and what we wanted. We had to negotiate with Duffy's to finish the repairs for almost a month following the original job, during which we had little or no use of the rooms, and furniture piled up everywhere else. By the way, the second round of repairs got done only after we sent Duffy's a letter with photos clearly showing the poor work they had done. Then we got a call and a visit from Brendan right away. Brendan is nice enough and really seems to want to deliver, but there was a substantial disconnect between the conversations with Brendan and the ability of his employees to follow through on those same conversations. During the followup repairs, the workers were almost always late and frequently didn't show up. We were clearly not a priority. The story ends in that the repairs eventually got done and they look okay. However, just as they were about to make good on the experience THEY PUT THE WRONG FINISH ON THE FLOOR - as my husband says - "Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory." If it wasn't obvious which finish to use (since they put it on), why not consult the record of our original job or ASK? Now we have a layer of satin over two layers of gloss - and it shows through in areas. And of course, we didn't realize that this final screwup had happened until after the finish had dried because it all looks glossy going on. It's not the look we wanted or asked for, but I'm just tired of dealing with the runaround from Duffy's, the smell, the dust and I want to use my living room. This is a company that's inexpensive, but you'll need to watch every step of the way if you expect to get what you asked for.

They came when they said they would, did the job in the amount of time, and cleaned up everything beautifully.

Fergal, who is possibly a co-owner or certainly one of the managers (it's a small company) came by and gave us an estimate and discussed the job. He was prompt and pleasant and seemed quite knowledgeable. I had gotten 2 other prices - one was $950 - (just priced that way as a minimum since the job was small), and $900 by a professional floor sander that does side jobs. We went with Duffy's - they had one review on Angie's list - very positive A - and price was a factor. I agreed to pay $150 more if stain was needed to make the floors match better and at Fergal's suggestion agreed to be there on the morning the job was started to check the color and decide about the stain. So I would have willingly paid $750. The crew arrived on time and did a good job of putting up plastic and controlling dust through the job. Brendan Duffy, the owner came with the crew instead of Fergal ... he pulled up the linoleum and said that stain would NOT be necessary for a good match. It looked that way to me so I agreed. The sanding was basically done in one day and 2 coats of water based poly were applied. The following day more sanding was to be done and 2 more coats applied. When I arrived home the first day, I was disappointed with the match between the floors but assumed that it just needed the other 2 coats. However, I was upset to see that the floor had water damage around the radiator where it was blackened and squishy. This was obviously NOT the fault of this company, but I thought they should have informed me of the problem and given me the CHOICE of having a repair done. They had not mentioned it at all. I spoke to Brendan Duffy about this and it was obvious he did not want to take the time to do this type of repair work. Of course I would have paid extra but he kind of brushed it off as a possibility. Also I asked about the difference in the floor coloring and he said "it will darken" After the second day (when the job was considered complete) the floor still looked dull and much lighter than the rest of the apartment. Everything was neat and clean, it was not a BAD job, it just didn't seem like a GOOD job. I told Brendan my concerns and my main point was " if the floor could not look the simlar with a water based finish - then at least the consumer should be INFORMED-- PRIOR to the work being done!!!" I feel that either I was not educated about the limitations of the materials or else they just did a poor job of getting a richer-looking finish (same flooring underneath). Brendan agreed to return at no extra charge, do a light sanding and put on two more coats of poly. In fairness, he was pleasant about this and they came back only 2 days later. Up to this point they were still owed half the payment. I can't honestly say one way or the other if they would have done this if I had already paid in full, but I was pleased that they returned and were nice about it. I did pay in full after that. Basically the floor is improved because they smoothed out some rough areas and the grain is smoother, but it's still dull looking. I can't say if this is the limitations of the water based finish or if they only did a so-so job. So I have mixed feelings - they were very pleasant, polite, prompt, cleaned up well etc. but I would not recommend them because of this question.

They were ready to go and finished in 2.5 days. The floors were amazing and the cost VERY reasonable.
