Earthbound is a nightmare! Frankly, we are kicking ourselves for ever getting involved with them. Among the myriad problems we have had with Mark: (1) he planted trees too close to the retaining wall he built, thus causing the wall to buckle, so in addition to the cost of the tree and its installation, we now must pay another professional to remove the trees (when we brought the matter to Mark?s attention, he denied there was a problem); (2) the wall itself was built in a half-assed manner (e.g., bricks are not flush, the ends of the wall do not smoothly meet up with the lawn), (3) Mark installed a sprinkler system that failed after the first summer we used it, and (4) he built ugly, useless pits in the back of our house (for over $10,000!) that have done nothing to alleviate our drainage problem and have caused other drainage professionals to question what on earth he was trying to do. Making matters worse, when our house was flooded because the pits became backed up and we called Earthbound for assistance, we were charged over $800 for essentially nothing -- and Mark blamed us for the problem because we supposedly did not perform the proper upkeep. (Upkeep had nothing to do with it. Mark should have installed catch basins in the drainage pits; he didn?t, so we?re stuck with drainage pits that are inevitably going to clog.) By the way, when we objected to the exorbitant fee, we were haled into small claims court (a first for us in 14 years of home ownership). In fact, this company seems to be awash in litigation -- not surprising, given our experience with their shoddy work. The day we appeared in court, Mark had two other matters on the docket, and we?ve since spotted him in another court, ready once again to litigate rather than perform suitable work. We have numerous drainage and landscaping professionals view the work that Earthbound performed, and they all have come away shaking their heads about various aspects of the poor workmanship. Earthbound is the worst. Don't use them under any circumstances.
Response from EARTHBOUND LANDSCAPING & TREES
"Dear Angies List and Members; We were recently made aware of and are disheartened to read the member's review posted last year. Up until the impacted drain system our relationship had been very good. The member's property has a topographically challenging drainage problem. A more efficient system was proposed, but, a less expensive alternative was chosen. Keeping the system free of leaf and debris build up is required to maintain water flow, and to prevent back pressure from forming behind the retaining wall. This had been in writing and discussed many times. In the spring of 2009, the member phoned our office during an awful unrelenting storm, water was backing up toward their finished basement. We immediately changed our schedule and dispatched our men, including Mark to restore water flow. This took three men the better part of a day to pump out, clean out and pressure jet the complete system. We billed out at straight time, no emergency fees as a courtesy for a total, including tax of $845. Instead of a thank you we received a letter from Attorney (the member), on his legal stationery stating that the enclosed $250 was all the job was worth and that we should accept it as full payment. We were shocked. Strangely, the year prior the member's paid $280 for a routine removal of leaves and debris, which took 1/4 of the time. We responded with correspondence and returned the check. We spoke several times and some of us had come to an agreement, the member refused. Only then did we initiate the small claims case for collection, the 2nd in over 20 years. Representing that Earthbound is "awash in litigation" is categorically false and clearly intended to malign Earthbound. I have worked for Earthbound for over 18 years and can attest to the fact that the member's experience is an anomaly. Fortunately we have other unsolicited reviews here at Angies that more accurately describe our work ethic and professionalism. Earthbound, now in its 25th year of service, takes pride in the quality drainage, tree and landscape work we perform and are pleased to furnish references of many clients. We hope you consider Earthbound for your next project and allow us to prove to you our long standing integrity in the service industry. Mention the member and receive a complimentary 10% discount. Most sincerely, Susan Musacchia, Office Manager."

Mark does roofs? Who knew? We've used him for our trees for years but his crew also repaired our retaining wall and provided good drainage, so when I asked him for a reference he admitted that he had a lot of experience with roofs. The crew as usual was completely noninvasive, using ladders to access the outside rather than trapsing through the house, except when necessary. Punctual, reliable, and very high quality work. The finish is not always exactly as one might picture (more industrial than residential) but you know the job has been done well. Not cheap but you get what you pay for.

We hired Mark after suffering an 8" flood in our basement from water running onto our property. We are delighted with his work. It is expensive, but it is comforting to know that when it rains, we will not have any flooding in our basement.
