We had trouble with him. So we had to go with somebody else. I ended up spending about $10000 with him. The architectural plans were very professional, but the bad thing was he kind of just did what he wanted to do instead of making plans for we wanted to do. He also drew some plans with an assumption without making a verification. The way it stands now, I'm like a hairpin from filing a lawsuit. But I probably won't go there. What I do think is important is to have the fact that when people look on Angie's List for this architect they need to understand that he is going to do what he wants to do and not what you want to do. He made some assumptions with our house based on tradition without verifying the facts. For instance he thought the house was built on a frost wall which means the foundation goes 4 ft. below the ground. He just made that assumption, but then never verified it. The house was built in 1960. In addition to that when we confronted him about the issue he said, "Oh well, I'm busy right now. I can't get to it for another month." In my mind, if I have a client who has paid me $10000 I would say, "Okay, well let's look at it and let's see how we can fix it." That really put us over the hill. The price was kind of on the higher end. We had to spend another $5000 to go with another architect. He could have had more frequent interactions. It probably didn't help that we're hundreds of miles apart, but you've got phone, you've got Internet, you've got all kinds of online access. He could have given us more feedback instead of less frequent and maybe this issue would have been caught in early stages.
Response from Architex
"We do appreciate the ability to respond to this homeowner’s review and take this opportunity to set the record straight for our future clients. We understand and sympathize with the owner’s emotional response to circumstances that arose upon completion of the design process. However, we do not believe there is any valid justification for the list of false claims and defamatory remarks aimed at principal Architect Tim Gallagher and Architex. We are extremely proud of our design process and methodology developed over 20 years in business. It starts with an ‘in depth’ meeting to review the owner’s goals, needs and requirements. In this project, we spent over three hours discussing the details of the owner’s large scale additions & alterations project prior to developing a design solution. Both concept level and full design phases of our work produced drawings reflecting the aesthetic vision and functional needs of the client ; no ego driven inspirations as suggested. Regarding documentation of the existing building, it is in fact a common practice and standard to make certain assumptions for unseen conditions such as the depth of underground foundation systems. We do not attempt to dig up and owner’s lawn to verify the depth of a foundation wall or footing anymore than we would tear open interior walls just to confirm the size and location of stud framing. There are occasional projects in which we may request that an owner or contractor perform some exploratory demolition to verify an unseen condition, but this is rarely done before completion of design level drawings. In this project, a general contractor developing an estimate from the design drawings verified that the bottom of the existing footing for the house was only two feet below grade level. An unfortunate circumstance as the house is susceptible to frost heave / movement. For the owner to make the comment that we should have known about the sub-standard pre-existing conditions is simply irresponsible. We sympathized with the owner at the time of discovery and upon request offered some ideas and solutions for working with the shallow foundation. The owner decided to avoid potential risks and opted to knock down the existing dwelling and rebuild a new custom home. The owner quickly requested another design proposal for this new project, so we certainly assumed they were satisfied with the quality of work through the two phases of design on the original project. We sent out a new proposal along with a detailed email discussing the start and timeline for the new design services. We apologize if the owner misinterpreted our communication as ‘disinterest,’ but the words “ I’m busy right now” were never spoken or written to the owner. We simply outlined how the new project would fit into our schedule of active and on-going projects. We at Architex are very well regarded for our proactive communication skills and are often complimented for truly listening to our clients wishes and goals while providing creative and cost-effective design solutions. We are disturbed by the unwarranted and defamatory comments of this homeowner and ask that our future clients take into full consideration the consistency of all the other member reviews."

The owner and architect Timothy Gallagher did my work. He set me up with the interview process for the design concept, then presenting the design concept, revising what the design concept was, then revision, redrawing, and the plans. He was very responsive dealing with the county building department concerning any questions about the drawings, the code requirements, as well as coordinating with the builder. He was very hands on from start to finish and he took care of everything. His professional expertise in architecture obviously was helpful going through with some issues that came out.

Tim from Architex is who performed the service. I was quite impressed with his understanding of the situation and his punctuality since it was a home purchase and we had a tight timeline and budget. Tim came out right away to inspect the site and had great advice to give me on the issue. I feel Tim is trustworthy based on what he said to me, he didn't actually recommend follow-up service through him for these issues. Normally I would have expected a sales pitch for some serious work. He gave a very honest assessment that was in my favor not his. I will likely go back to Tim for other work later down the road that will require an architect based on my interaction with him here. I should also say Tim was very knowledgeable about historic buildings and was a treasure trove of information on these types of structures.
