My wife wanted to take the opportunity to change the color of the house, so we asked Memminger's for an estimate on how much it would cost to paint the other two sides not covered by insurance, as well as replacing the old gutters on the east side of the house which also was not covered by insurance. We were given an estimate of around $5000 so we said go ahead and do it.
Also, the clapboard/masonite siding on the south side of the house had completely failed. The old paint (which was well over 10 years old) had mostly peeled off, exposing the siding to the weather side of the house. It had begun expanding after absorbing water and could not be painted over (this is the south side of the house that the insurance company had agreed to cover being painted). The home owner's insurance company had told me that Memminger's also had a general contracting company associated with their painting business, which is the reason why this insurance company used them, so I asked how much it would cost to completely tear off and replace the siding on the south side of the house. They said $1500 so I said OK do that too. I knew it would look absolutely terrible if they just painted over it; it was completely obvious that it needed to be replaced.
They showed up on the first day promptly at 7am. For the most part they were always prompt. And the workers themselves were very courteous, clean and friendly. But somehow they as a company completely messed up what we had originally agreed upon. I spoke with the "foreman" of the job the first morning, verifying that they would be painting the entire house, removing all the siding on the south side and replacing it with new siding. He agreed. That night I came home to discover they had spent the entire day SCRAPING the water-damaged cardboard/Masonite/clapboard siding on the south side of the house. The foreman claimed that is what we had agreed upon. I disagreed, told him to stop all work and have his boss call me before anymore work was done.
The next morning the owner showed up and argued with me on my back lawn for about a half an hour over what was being done and what wasn't. He wanted me to pay for the day of labor for 8 workmen scraping the siding on my south side. I said I wouldn't pay because I never asked them to do that and I told him I would tell the insurance company about this (which would help them lose future contracts from this very large national insurance company) so he relented and agreed to replace the siding as originally planned. I came home that day and discovered that yes they had replaced the siding, but it was on a horizontal slant so it didn't match up on the southwest corner with the siding on the west side of the house. They claimed it was level and that the siding everywhere else on my house was wrong. They tried to hide how the siding didn't match up (by almost a FOOT in some places) behind a downspout on the corner furthest away from the back entrance to my house.
They also never prepped any of the outside of the house before painting it. I have found flies, bird droppings, dirt and other unwanted materials painted right over on all areas of the house since they left. I also believe they only put one coat on, since if anything rubs against the house (like falling tree branches) it very easily scrapes off the paint down to the previous color.
Maybe because they knew I was extremely dissatisfied with their work, they ended up sub-contracting the replacement of my gutters to another company. I was home the day they came and installed them. THAT company did a perfect job. My new gutters are beautiful and now some 3 years later they are still in perfect shape.
After much arguing, many phone calls with the office manager, and me making several threats to sue them and to tell the insurance company about how they had messed up the job, they ended up discounting the overall job from the $6500 estimate to a little under $3500. But I will never even think of calling them back to perform any work on my house again.
