Auto Body Work
After the tree hit my car in September 2012, I took the car to Schabot's right after I got the insurance adjustment based on the recommendation of two acquaintances. They claimed to have the repairs completed two weeks later, with the exception of the rear trunklid spoiler, which was on order. In the interim, I learned that my father had a highly aggressive cancer; I made them aware, and they let me have the car until the spoiler came in.
When I picked it up, on a snowy day, it looked okay. But after the haze of running out the door to see Dad wore off, I found that the work was incredibly sub-par:
* The paint was contaminated; rust-colored flecks are trapped under the clearcoat.
* The paint was poorly applied, with visible fishscaling. The finish doesn't come close to matching the texture of the rest of the car.
* The back glass was replaced with a substandard aftermarket part, despite my insurance company having specifically written for the cost of factory glass. The aftermarket glass had major visible distortions. They claimed that the insurance paperwork called for aftermarket glass, but when I dropped off the car I explicitly told them that the quote was for OEM glass -- the adjuster's computer did not have the part code for the OEM glass he wanted installed, and I was sitting with the adjuster when he called the local Kia dealer to get the quote for the glass.
* Several parts, such as two of the three rear light assemblies quoted in the adjustment, were not replaced. In the case of the light assemblies, Schabot's had contacted the insurance company to tell them that they had misquoted the base-model traditional lights at approximately $130 each instead of my car's LED light clusters at $500 each... and then failed to actually replace them.
* The parcel shelf over the trunk was deformed by the tree, such that the center brake light no longer aligns with the back glass and casts a red glare on the back glass whenever it lights up. It has a visible dip in it.
* The car, which is black, had numerous places where white buffing compound had been applied too liberally and then not removed, resulting in hard-to-remove white spots.
When I discovered these issues, I sent Schabot's a certified letter detailing the problems. They stated that they would make it right. In the meantime, my father passed away, necessitating a further delay in returning the car to them. (There were also some difficulties getting them to return my calls; I was told that one of the staff took my message off their machine and lost it.)
When I finally arranged with them to return, in February, they promised to fix all of the "punch list" items from the letter. They replaced the glass with factory glass, and they installed the rear spoiler. Not only were the remaining issues not addressed, but new issues were created: The glass contractor severely damaged the plastic interior trim on the C-pillars, so they no longer attach securely to the car. They are also badly scratched. The rear spoiler was incompletely painted, and is beginning to show signs of rust as a result.
I also found that the trunk was not properly aligned to the car when I went to a car wash, and found everything in my trunk soaking wet. That necessitated the purchase of a new first aid kit and other sundries.
In short, they failed to do all the work they were paid to do, the work they DID do was done incompetently, and I am left with a car that requires further repairs before the lease expires. They did this to someone whose father was dying of cancer, knowing that was the case.
I cannot recommend them under any circumstances.
