Nicholas S. Guglielmetti (NSG) had done some work in the neighborhood and I received good recommendations, so I asked him to inspect our roof, which was leaking here and there. I was especially attracted to Nick because he told one of our neighbors that he did NOT need a new roof. Nick said that ours might last another five years or so, but that it was approaching the end of its lifespan. We decided to go with a replacement, this WITHOUT knowing that Tropical Storm Irene was coming. I confess that I did not comparison shop, so I left the rating under price "n/a". The price seemed fair: it's a big roof with lots of angles, dormers, and a steep pitch. Nick E-mailed me the contract on July 2, 2011. I sent him a check for the materials ($6,200), including an extra $650 for a replacement operable skylight, not in the original contract. Work was to begin in the fourth week of July.
It turned out that Nick's schedule changed, and he asked if he could begin work in the third week of July, and I agreed. The week was blistering hot, the hottest of the summer, and so the work took longer than anticipated, nearly the entire week. I'm not sure how Nick's workers, all of whom spoke Spanish, survived the heat, but they did. Everything proceeded according to contract, with no problems, other than the weather. Some contingency carpentry had to be done--a couple of sheets of plywood were rotted and some shingles needed to be replaced on the dormers. I provided some paint and Nick's workers finished up painting the new wood the following week. NSG cleaned up and removed all debris, and I paid Nick the contractual balance ($6,700) for labor, removal, and dump costs. Installation of the replacement skylight, contingency carpentry, painting, and installation of some new ice melting wires I had bought added up to $600.
Later in the summer, Tropical Storm Irene hit, and dumped 6 - 9 inches of rain (accounts differ) on our new roof, and not a drop leaked through. I was very pleased that we had made the decision to replace the roof, and very pleased with NSG Construction Services. I recommend them.
