DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY. We just had them put on a new metal roof and it's completely oil-canned and dented throughout the whole house. It looks absolutely awful. The owner is unwilling to even discuss what a horrible job his team did. He said its because of the 'legnth' of the panels but it happened on the short panels on the shed and the back of the house. BEWARE they're just about doing the job quickly and not doing a good job. We're going to have to have another company re-do it after the shotty job J&A did.

First rate. Got a start time around a month off and even though there had been a lot of weather over that period, they were there on that day and cleared snow and swarmed the job. Completed it that day (except for gutters -- a different contractor came next day and finished up). The only thing I cannot comment on is price. My needs were urgent, my leaks were severe. I went with the company that the most people had personally recommended to me. I did not have the time to get multiple bids. It was a lot of $$ but I now have a primo roof.

J&A is very easy to work with. Our communication with them was great . . . very responsive to our questions/concerns. I was very impressed with the workmanship and how the whole project was orchestrated . . . guys show up in morning, 10 minutes later they are on the roofing taking off the old shingles, draping the house to protect it . . . about an hour later the shingles arrive and are hoisted up to the roof . . . shortly after that truck left, the dumpster showed up . . . about 10 hours later the job is finished . . . WOW! I've seen other companies take days to do smaller projects. Cleanup was on going throughout the project so made final cleanup a breeze.

J & A Roofing installed a new metal roof on 2/3rds of my building. Another company had done the first 1/3 a few years ago with very unfortunate results. J & A's work was totally superior to the other company. The tear off of the shingles was completed in one day. A dumpster was provided for the debris. The clean up around the property was such that I couldn't find a single nail or screw on the ground. The next 5 days the metal roof was installed. The men were focused on their work and meticulous in the details (measuring, cutting, etc.). They were courteous and professional. I am delighted with the new roof and would certainly recommend J & A Roofing to anyone seeking a metal roof. Recent heavy rains have tested this new installation and there have been no problems whatsoever. I would give this company a Grade A based on my recent experience.

Because they have such a great reputation both on here and by word of mouth, I called when a leak created problems in my living room after this last harsh winter. When I described the problem, I was told it sounded like typical ice dam issues and that I should have my gutters looked into and that I didn't need roof work. I didn't entirely disagree with needing work on the gutters, so I tried that first. While that has resolved some issues, my leak is back and possibly a little worse because the original problem I believed I had was not resolved. I called back to see about repair and was told it would be a 4-6 week wait. I understand that. But when I asked about the service, I was told that they "don't do estimates" they just show up and do the work and that it's "$65 per man per hour plus materials." I'd pay the price but not under those conditions. I'll be calling Monday to get off the wait list and pursue another company.

UPDATE to response:

No ice damming. Not bashing: Said you had a great reputation, still believe it, chose to call based on it, agreed to try what you recommended, understood your wait list and chose not to pursue work without an estimate. Saw in another review response that you don't like to work on someone else's install, which I also understand and now know. Mine was done by the previous homeowner, so no company to call. Peace.

Response from J & A Roofing Company Inc

"We do not do estimates for repair work. We never did any work for you so this review is really just because you didn't get the answers you wanted when you called. We apologize this time of year especially after a heavy rain our repair schedule fills up very quickly. Our customers where we have installed new roofs get top priority. We would recommend calling whoever installed your roof because you should have some sort of labor warranty. Don't beat our company up because you had ice damming issues last winter."

"[Member Name Removed] we specialize in installing new roofs. We stay away from repairing roofs that were not installed by us because as soon as we show up and touch the roof we are taking responsibility for someone else's work. As far as paying the workers off the books and not carrying insurance this is simply not true. This review is very misleading being we never installed a roof for you. You called us to repair your roof that you had someone else install. My recommendation would be to call them to stand behind their work as my family has been doing for over 75 years for homeowners in the Hudson Valley."

I needed a roofing specialist because we have a problem with the drainage of the existing roof. I heard J&A advertising on a local radio program so decided to give them a call. The receptionist was nice and called right back, she said she would have an estimator call me. He called the next day and was asking me very specific and technical questions about roofing. I told him I wasn't sure what needed to be done, and he kept asking me whether I needed a flat roof job or a shingle job. I told him a number of times that I wasn't sure because I needed an expert to take a look at the problem, and his reply was that if it wasn't a shingle job, I needed a different estimator. If it was a shingle job, he would come out. He was pushy and not helpful at all. I will not be hiring this company.
Response from J & A Roofing Company Inc

"[Member name removed] we are sorry that you had this experience. We specialize in sloped roofing, specifically installing new roofs that we can warranty. We would recommend contacting the company that installed the roof originally if they are still in business."

I emailed in the request for J&A to quote on the job.  I received a call back the same day from Fred (the estimator/manager) who was onsite to quote the job the very next day.  He called me from on site, discussed the job briefly, and issued a quote that same day.  I awarded the business to them about 2 weeks later and they had the job scheduled for 2 weeks after that.
They showed up on the date scheduled (rescheduled 1 day delayed due to rain).  They brought a crew of 5 guys and finished the job in one day (very speedy).  Work seems to be of good quality and they finished with no unexpected fees.  They did a good job cleaning up the job site.

UPDATE:
3 months later I have an active water leak running down my interior wall due to ice damming.  I've reached out to J&A and am hoping J&A stands by their roofing job.  I raised this concern with them before they installed the roof and showed them the per-existing damage (two sections are under 2:12 slope and had previous ice damming damage).  They reassured us that the shingle roof and ice/water shield was a viable solution.  Seems like that may have been a mistake...
If you have a low slope roof - consider mod bit or rubber rather than shingle, regardless of what is recommended.

UPDATE:
14 months later I have had major leaks on two sides of my house now.  The water is pooling on the shingles and then entering the house because the roof slope is way too shallow for the product used by J&A.  The manufacturer spec says the product requires 2:12 slope and special installation process at that slope (which they didn't follow').  My roof is only 1:12 to 2:12 on about 60% of the roof area.  I'm now in a situation where I need to rip off 60% of my roof and replace it with a different roofing product that is actually appropriate.  I've notified them of the problem and requested they stand by their services but have not yet had any favorable response from J&A.  As of right now, I'm about to slather tar all over my new roof just to be able to get through the winter without water coming into my dining room in sheets.  Not happy with J&A at all.  Would never in a thousand years use them again.

This home improvement adventure went flawlessly thanks to the staff at J and A Roofing. The office personnel were friendly, prompt, and professional. Fred came to estimate the cost of the work and emailed me an estimate with details the same afternoon! He was also extremely helpful about working around my schedule. The workers came, they saw, and they conquered...meaning their work was done very efficiently and very well (my neighbor was so impressed by their speed and craftsmanship that she told me she wanted to come over to cheer them on). They were also polite to me and helped me when I needed to maneuver across the lawn to let the dog out. Within one day, I had a new roof, and the next day the dumpster was gone! I highly recommend J and A Roofing company and would not hesitate to use them again if necessary.

Jand A did a fantastic job! Whole house exterior remodel. New roof, siding, shutters and gutters. The cost of each project was below what I expected and they were responsive and very quick. No "handshake and promise" with them, they were completely professional with everything on the up and up with contracts, insurance, payments and paperwork. The work was fantastic, the crew was wonderful and they got a very large job done so fast I couldnt believe it. AAA+ and if I could give a higher mark I would. My house looks amazing!!

Fred Horowitz gave me an estimate on July 14 and the contract was signed on July 18. The installation crew arrived early on July 31 and the materials arrived soon after. By the end of the day the old siding had been removed, plywood and insulation was installed and they had begun installing the vinyl soffits. They were unable to work on Aug 1 but came on Aug 2 and installed the siding and completed the soffits. I am pleased with the appearance of the house and the workmanship. Several people have commented on it.

They removed the old roof and got a new decking on all in one day! Using an enormous tarp, they protected the two story rhododendron and moved all of the debris into the dumpster. While a dusty, messy process, they cleaned up every bit of it as they went along. The workers were a great crew, worked hard in spite of the heat and whistled their way through the days. The new roof was a special order color and was available in only a few days. And skylights are just lovely! The end result is a great looking roof! We are very happy... It's fun to watch cars slowing down to inspect it, too. I hope Jand A get lots more business from that - it is a great looking finish for this old house.

Roof is fine so far. Asked about snow guards at the time of installation and was told they were not necessary inspite of the fact that the edge of the roof followed the entry path to our front door. Path was unusable this winter due to snow crashing down suddenly. Snow also ruined a vent for a stove. It took many emails, calls and relentless pursuit over several months to achieve a satisfactory resolution.
Response from J & A Roofing Company Inc

"This women is the daughter of the customer. [member name removed] called to blackmail us to send her $700 to cover the cost of the chimney which was installed after the metal roof was complete. Our company was in no way responsible for the snow sliding off the roof and damaging a chimney that was installed after our contracted roof work was complete. This review has nothing to do with the work we were contracted to do which was install a new metal roof. We believe in karma at J&A Roofing and [member name removed] your untruthful and damaging review will come back to you ten fold."
