"Thank you for your kind review and taking the time to post about your experience with us!!"
In my opinion, Affatato is not a reputable company!
The removal of the old driveway and installation of the paver border was done competently but the pourinf of the new asphalt was a disaster. It was done on a very cold day, they were slow to roll the asphalt with a heavy roller and the asphalt cooled before it was rolled. It did not compact and seal. It is now very soft and disintegrating. My children are unable to even rollerblade on the driveway. Our cars are sinking up to 1/2" just parking and most of the surface is severely pock-marked.
Affatato Paving claims there is nothing wrong with the asphalt installation.
Here is the letter I recently delivered to the company. The Contractor name has been redacted.
Sirs,
On November 3, 2014, pursuant to a contract with (Contractor Name) your company began a project to remove and repave our driveway at the above address. The old driveway was removed, the area was
re-graded and filled with a base of RCA. A paver border was then installed.
On December 15 the asphalt paving was installed.
On December 16 I noticed a very small
trickle of water on the driveway. That small trickle continued so I took a
picture of it on December 18. By December 24th the single trickle
had become over 100 individual trickles and the amount of water seeping through
the driveway was quite large. The water was coming more from areas where there
was a seam but it was certainly coming from nearly every area on the sloped
portion of the driveway.
I consulted with(Contractor Name)
He was concerned and contacted your office. As the driveway is asphalt and
winter had set in we resolved to await a solution in the spring.
Your representative, (I believe his name was Jeff) came to examine the driveway in
the early spring (Early April). He told me that he thought there was a problem
with the asphalt mix. When he left he advised me that he would contact the
asphalt company to obtain new asphalt and that he was sure your company would
be returning to remove the current asphalt and repave at no further cost to me.
He specified that he would call within two weeks to let me know the details of
the repaving. One and one half MONTHS later (last week) (Contractor) met with
your company President at my house without my presence or knowledge. I am told
your company president looked at the driveway and determined that there is
nothing wrong with it.
Over the winter the water
continued to trickle out of the driveway causing ice dams and slowly tearing
the asphalt apart. The limestone from the RCA beneath the driveway precipitated
onto the driveway as the water evaporated causing white staining on the
driveway. Along nearly the entire driveway there are what look to be porous
rocks that shattered when water was absorbed and froze over the winter. The
voids appear as pock marks with white crumbly rock at the bottom. The surface
has begun to disintegrate leaving a loose grit along the whole of the surface.
In the spring as the asphalt warmed it became extremely soft on nearly the entire
surface. So much so that our cars are sinking up to ½ inch when parked, the
asphalt rips up when any turn is made on it and even my son?s roller blades are
sinking into the surface not only when he stops but also when he skates
anywhere. This makes it somewhat dangerous for any activity.
The surface has become unstable, unusable and is obviously disintegrating. The
cause can be attributed to the cold weather on the day of and several days
prior to when the paving was done. A look at the weather data shows that the
evening before paving the temperature got to as low as 28 degrees. When the
paving started at 9AM the temperature in the area was 33 degrees F according to
the government data. The paving finished shortly after noon. The temperature at
noon was 43 degrees F.
All the literature I have read since regarding paving
tells me that paving in temperatures between 40 and 49 degrees should be done
with extreme caution ensuring that the asphalt is heavy rolled within 15
minutes (Government data). The literature also state that paving should not be attempted in temperatures below
40 degrees F.
Your company paved in temperatures that were unsuitable for paving by any objective
standard. Your company also did not roll the pavement in a timely manner (I saw
parts sit for up to 30 minutes before the heavy roller was used). Additionally,
a second truck with asphalt sat at the curb for nearly two hours before being
used. This caused poor compaction and many cold seams. I expected a
professionally done job and your company has not lived up to those
expectations. I believe you should be given the opportunity
to ?make it right? and I am requesting that you contact me directly by June 19th
to schedule removal and repaving of my driveway.
I will withhold action with the
Department of Labor, Licensing & Consumer Affairs for 10 days during which
time I hope you will reconsider your decision. In the mean time I have and will
continue to write reviews on every website possible detailing my experience
with your company. I will be happy to remove them all upon timely completion of
the repaving. Please understand that while we are not litigious people, we will
not stand by idly and be victims. We will pursue legal action if this matter is
not resolved in a timely and satisfactory manner.
I have sent a copy of this to (Contractor). I have attached multiple pictures to aide in your
review. I look forward to a complete and timely resolution to this matter.
The driveway also pits very easily. And there are cracks in the asphalt as well. This should not be happening to a driveway less than 2 years old.
I contacted the company a few times, most recently about two weeks ago, in regards to the failure of their "repair" to the improperly graded area that is continuing to cause flooding issues and was told someone would contact me but I never recieved a response.
I think this is a case of they got mt money, they made a half hearted attempt to correct the problem instead of doing the job right and since theyve been paid, they cant be bothered. The grading issue is a real problem. Any asphalt contractor, general contractor, landscaper, building inspector etc would agree everything is graded away from the house.
If this company is proud of their work at my home, they should put pictures of the work they performed on their website and have potential customers contact me in regards to their work. With a simple garden hose I can show anyone the faulty grading. Its not my opinion they did an improper job, its fact.
Maybe my experience is unique with this company. I can only talk about my experiences. I would just urge anyone who is thinking of using them to ensure they do the work correctly and refuse their band aid fixes and insist they do the job over, correctly.
As of this date, despite several calls, I have not heard from this company. That alone should give an perspective customer pause.
I can not recommend them to anyone. I have already steered several people away from them by simply showing them their work and letting that speak for itself.
Jeff, the salesperson was on time, explained everything, gave us a written estimate, and came back when there were a couple of issues. He was great. The women who answer the phone are very professional and have always forwarded messages and we received calls back.
We were not happy with phase 1 of the project. We asked for the dirt they removed to be put in the yard. They dumped it on the side of the house. They left a huge hole at the end of our driveway with nothing covering it. They dug out a stump for us, which was great, but then they left it on the side of the house. Thankfully the town was coming through that day to pick up brush. A town worker, who went above and beyond, came onto the grass and took the stump for us. He didn't have to do that. I just happened to look out because I heard the truck. The guys from Affatato got a huge tip from my husband, and they just dumped everything. We're finding that when you tip people, you get the worst from them instead of the best. We can't figure that out, but we really don't want to tip people anymore.
Phase 2 went much better. The masons (can't remember their names) did a great job. Only thing is I wish I would've gone with our original plan. The mason showed me the way he had to do the job because the ground sunk and our first step was really steep. So the belgium blocks on the grass side would've been really high and it wouldn't have looked right. We went with his plan which was to put pavers on the grass side. I'm not crazy about the way it looks. I think we should've left the high step and went with the original plan, then fixed the steps later. They have to be done anyway, and now we'd have the belgium blocks on both sides, the way I wanted them.
No problems with phase 3.
We did have a couple of issues with tire marks from my husband's truck even though we didn't drive on the driveway for 2 weeks (they suggested only 10 days), and we don't turn the wheels while the cars are still. They came to fix the problem, but honestly it just looks worse. We were told to wait a year until it all settles, and then they'll seal it. I hope it looks better at that point because instead of tire marks, we now have patches where they used a torch to repair the spots, and parts of the driveway look more brown than black.
I'm not sure if I would use them again. I answered yes because we are happy with some of the work and the customer service is pretty good. However, now that I'm a member of Angie's list, I would definitely research some other companies.
That next spring, I had grass growing through the middle of my driveway, I call Affatato, they told me to go blank off, so I called the Better Business Buereu, they asked me how I could prove that my driveway wasn't 2', I agreed to cut a 2x2 portion of my driveway out, if it was 2and quot; I would pay for the repair, if not I wanted a new driveway. One week later the just showed up and added 2and quot; of asphalt to the old driveway and left.
Bad News using Affatato Paving.
1)They did not cover the drying cement base ( knowing that it might rain) and it leaked onto the asphalt and lawn.
2)Instead of filling the space between the new bricks and driveway with asphalt, they filled it with cement (unevenly) and it looked terrible.
3)When I told the owner that I would not pay until they fixed the problems, he called me a f****** ahole and said he would sue me.
4) I talked to another owner who said that they would try to remedy the problem but the fix was poor at best.
5) My next door neighbor also had major problems over his driveway with them
So i guess if you contract them make sure they make you a priority because i recommended them; after the first visit to my neighbors and now to this day June 6th 2013 my house and 3 other homes in our neighborhood don't have driveways. I contracted them back in April and its the worst mistake I made. Do yourself a favor and get someone else.
PS: Meanwhile a different neighbor a few blocks down had a different contractor and he was finished in two weeks.
"Hello [member name removed], We apologize for the recent delay in your project due to the weather. However, as we have discussed with you, we did make numerous attempts to contact you, upon which you told us that on the only number initially provided, there is a voicemail that is not checked frequently. We did have numerous schedule dates for you when the weather was clear, but unless you return our call and we receive a confirmation from you of the schedule date, we cannot put you on the schedule. It is a company policy to have someone present at each phase of work. The past few weeks of May have provided a great challenge to everyone in the construction industry as the weather has been less than ideal for any type of masonry or paving. While other companies may choose to install a driveway when the ground is soft, which in the long run will lead to cracking and crumbling for the homeowner, our company does not. We take great pride in our work and try to create the greatest outcome for a homeowner in the long run. We do not want to see a homeowner have to replace a driveway in a few years due to us not taking the necessary precautions during the installation process. We understand the process of having construction can be very frustrating, but we are not delaying you unnecessarily. We have been installing driveways for over 30 years, and many of our driveways installed the first year we opened are still in existence due to our practices. We hope our current customers and future customers are willing to trust the judgement and experience we have gained in this industry."
"Hello, We would like to apologize for your poor experience with our company. However, we reviewed our records and we do not have any records of you receiving a driveway from us. If you could, please call us so we may either rectify the situation or so we may adequately respond to the situation. Under no circumstances are anyone besides employees allowed on company equipment. All of our employees are knowledgeable of the appropriate heights and grades of driveway installation. Every employee also agrees to a drug-free work environment."
"Hi [member name removed], Thank you for your review. The small areas you are referencing are more than likely texture issues. Asphalt is a stone mixture and different parts of the driveway can appear more rough and stoney than others. We always suggest to allow the driveway the full year to cure, and then complete the sealcoat. After the sealcoat is completed, the driveway will appear much smoother. Thank you again for your review!"
"Hi [member name removed], Thank you very much for your review! It was a pleasure working with you, and we are happy to hear you are pleased with your new driveway! Enjoy it! :)"
