"I am so sorry you did not have the opportunity to meet with one of our estimators. We mistakenly made the appointment with you for Labor Day, and unfortunately, this is a Holiday for our company. We attempted to reschedule with you, but you hung up on the receptionist. We would be more than happy to reschedule with you and do have Saturday and evening appt available. We wish you all the best with your upcoming project. Sincerely, HPM Carpentry"
One of their crew, Craig, wet mopped my newly refinished hardwood floors! This is a major no-no that any experienced contractor should know.
Also, my backdoor installation had several mistakes:
1) there was big chip on the door frame edge
2) 5 missing screws from the hinge plate
3) the lock plate was installed improperly so it couldn't close unless I pushed the door frame inward.
If anything was wrong or missing, a person would have alerted the homeowner of the problem versus being silent so I think their crew member was lazy and hoping nothing would be noticed.
Also, I was supposed to have them install the storm doors but when I asked one of his crew, Cesar, how long it would take him, to install, he told me he had only installed one and it took 5 hrs! I told Nicole, HPM's project coordinator, that I would have another carpenter do it since they've installed hundreds and indeed it took him 1.5 hrs and charged $150 per storm door. HPM's charge could have been ~$300+ per door.
HPM Carpentry and George Apap Painting's prices are reasonable but I don't think all of their crew are highly skilled so their work can be a mixed bag. Owner, George seems like an honest, ethical person but he didn't like it when I asked him about his carpenters' expertise in doing some backyard carpentry work (eg., installing a 16' wood post with bat houses). As I told George, I don't think I should pay for someone's on-the-job training. I'm paying for someone's experience, skills and expertise to do something correctly in a professional and timely manner. When I contacted him again a couple of months later about re-tiling work for my bathroom, which the original carpenter messed up, and about painting my basement boiler room, he told me I should go with a local carpenter/painter instead which I did.
I think it's reasonable for any homeowner to question a contractor on their expertise but it's George's company so he can pick and choose customers and vice versa. I'm okay with it but since he's a homeowner, does he not question various contractors before hiring them? Does he want a contractor who has performed a task many times vs a few? Or as a business owner, does he not ask questions before he hires a potential carpenter or painter to verify their skill level? Does he pay the same rate for an inexperienced or experienced person?
Had I questioned my original bathroom contractor about their glass tile installation expertise for my bathroom renovation, I probably wouldn't have gone with him but he probably would have lied anyway. In fact, the Westchester Consumer Protection Agency hit him with multiple violations, fined him and he decided to turn in his license.
"[Member name removed], Your review would be easier to understand if you only reviewed one contractor at a time. We lived up to our contract with you and satisfied all of your concerns, the other contractor did not. Reviewing each contractor separately would be more appropriate. Yes, I was less than forthcoming when I suggested that you find a contractor more local. I felt that was better than telling you that the true reason that I wanted you to find another contractor, among other things, is that your email banter with my office was inappropriate. In hind sight it would have been more accurate to handle the issue head on. We always live up to our promises and are available to repair any deficiencies in our work."
My job was a small one but they treated it with the same diligence as a larger one.
I would highly recommend George APAP Painting and Carpentry and will use them again with no hesitation when the need arrives.
Thanks to all for a great job!
Anneliese
