Ben Mattern showed up for the estimate on time and emailed the written estimate within 2 days. Ben and his crew showed up to perform the work when they said they'd be there, only challenge to that was the weather, conditions did extend the length of time needed to complete the job. Despite "surprises" discovered during demolition (unexpected structural features beneath the planter in front, three layers of concrete in the old patio - 16" thick in places), Ben and company worked steadily towards completion of the work. The finished job looks incredible ! We are extremely pleased with both the experience, price and completed project !

This project was a little unique in that we were placing a new garage slab (foundation) under an existing garage. The garage is about 100 years old, and never had a foundation. It was literally built on the dirt and rotting away as a result. There was an existing asphalt/concrete floor that was between the walls, but nothing underneath them but dirt. I got permits, lifted the garage, demo'd the existing floor, built concrete forms and placed rebar, and then had Mattern Masonry come in to place the concrete and finish it.
Ben Mattern came on site to quote the job and discuss specifics of the project. He was able to meet me the same day that I called him and he was on time. I work as an engineer and often work with large commercial contractors and detailed concrete specification. I included some of those specifications into my plans and Ben was not quick to dismiss them as other contractors I got quotes from were. Many of the things that make for strong concrete also make it more costly and difficult to place and finish. Ben was aware of these requirements and willing to do the job as specified. Others who quoted (and didn't get the job) would say things like and quot;that's not necessaryand quot;, and quot;we don't need to do thatand quot;, and quot;that's overkilland quot; etc. Ben's response indicated to me that he intended to do a quality job, was trustworthy, and professional.
Day of the job the crew arrived at 7am sharp just as arranged. We had a small concern from a neighbor about contractors cars parked in the street in front of their house, and the crew responded professionally and politely. By 7:30 the crew was set up and the first concrete truck arrived. Ben came up with a really smart way of moving telephone lines out of the way for the truck which saved me from having to take them down. By 9:00 all concrete was placed and screeded and floated. They waited properly for bleed water to evaporate before each hit with the trowels. After the final hit with the trowels they gave the concrete two hours to set and and made control cuts with an early entry saw. Ben was the only contractor I could find who did this. Early entry cutting is considered a superior method for control joints as it creates a weak spot to guide cracking before internal stresses build up in the concrete. Other contractors wanted to come back the next day to make cuts, which might have worked but is a little more risky.
After the cuts were made the slab looked great. The crew did a good job a cleaning up. In general they were very friendly and polite and knowledgeable about what they were doing.

Ben and his crew were fantastic . They showed up exactly when he said they would each day they were here . Ben for being young has a knack for not only knowing his trade but for managing and directing his crew . All worked very hard and knew exactly what was to be done and what was expected of them . Ben definitely provided a top notch product for fair price. I would not hesitate to have them to my home again if I need their services . Very professional .

Everything went well. Ben arrived on time, explained what caused the problem and how the repair was to be carried out, and was prompt with his estimate. I had some time constraints, so we set a tentative date after Labor Day. When the time came to do the work, Ben was on time, efficient and clean - there was a fair amount of jackhammereing and debris, but in both the pouring and demolition, everything was swept and cleaned up. The final product looks great, and I'll use Ben again when i need concrete or masonry work.

Our porch had developed two huge cracks allowing the porch to slope toward the house. The replacement was done with professionalism and experience. The owner was on the job during the entire installation and both he and his competent crew
was always responsive to any questions or concerns. Once started, the job was carried through to its completion.
I have already recommended this firm to several friends.

Mr. Mattern came to the house, gave us an estimate and responded to questions via email. He and his crew worked on the job for about 4 days. They were good about revising plans, for example tearing out the bushes. He and his workers were pleasant, polite and professional. The work was well-done and matched our expectations.

Ben was great. He gave a detailed estimate and was good at communicating for start date and details. He was on site everyday working, and the site was cleaned up every night. We had to make a couple of unexpected adjustments to the plans, and Ben thoroughly explained how and why things had to change. In the end, the patio came out wonderful and the stamping looks great. We've gotten lots of compliments. The guys were great and worked very hard - even in the 90 degree heat! We would definitely use them again.

Ben was AWESOME, he was the best estimate with the most detail, and included several custom features that were very specific to the site including under slab drain and custom grading of the pour. The tear out was very hard and the previous pour was done so irregularly that Ben had to completely level and back fill with new crushed stone and redo the whole underlay before pouring the slab. The job was professional and is colored to accent the house, and has completely upgraded the curb appeal and look as well as giving us a lovely new outdoor space that is much nicer than the old cracked and discolored slab.Ben was onsite with his crew, personally managing the job, his crew was neat and thorough, and cleaned and kept the site very tidy given the amount of excavation and power equipment that had to be brought in. He communicated each day where we were, and how everything was progressing and we were finished in great time.

We needed repairs to a retaining wall next to our driveway. Ben was prompt in giving us an estimate and the wall was repaired within a week of the estimate. They are a very professional company and meticulous at what they do. I have had them do multiply projects at my home including a patio, foundation repair, tiling, granite installation, and this retaining wall. Every job has turned out perfectly

They have a good reputation. Our nephew is in the concrete business and he steered us their way. Everything turned out absolutely great! The tear out was the cleanest it could be. I have some utility cabinets out in the garage. Normally the homeowner would be responsible for taking them out of the garage, but I asked them if they would help me. They told me to just leave them there and that they would get them. They were competent with everything.
