Ben Mattern came on site to quote the job and discuss specifics of the project. He was able to meet me the same day that I called him and he was on time. I work as an engineer and often work with large commercial contractors and detailed concrete specification. I included some of those specifications into my plans and Ben was not quick to dismiss them as other contractors I got quotes from were. Many of the things that make for strong concrete also make it more costly and difficult to place and finish. Ben was aware of these requirements and willing to do the job as specified. Others who quoted (and didn't get the job) would say things like and quot;that's not necessaryand quot;, and quot;we don't need to do thatand quot;, and quot;that's overkilland quot; etc. Ben's response indicated to me that he intended to do a quality job, was trustworthy, and professional.
Day of the job the crew arrived at 7am sharp just as arranged. We had a small concern from a neighbor about contractors cars parked in the street in front of their house, and the crew responded professionally and politely. By 7:30 the crew was set up and the first concrete truck arrived. Ben came up with a really smart way of moving telephone lines out of the way for the truck which saved me from having to take them down. By 9:00 all concrete was placed and screeded and floated. They waited properly for bleed water to evaporate before each hit with the trowels. After the final hit with the trowels they gave the concrete two hours to set and and made control cuts with an early entry saw. Ben was the only contractor I could find who did this. Early entry cutting is considered a superior method for control joints as it creates a weak spot to guide cracking before internal stresses build up in the concrete. Other contractors wanted to come back the next day to make cuts, which might have worked but is a little more risky.
After the cuts were made the slab looked great. The crew did a good job a cleaning up. In general they were very friendly and polite and knowledgeable about what they were doing.
was always responsive to any questions or concerns. Once started, the job was carried through to its completion.
I have already recommended this firm to several friends.
