Contractor low-balled the estimate to get the job in our opinion. The initial work was ok (roofing and siding) but slow. The roofing work took almost 2 1/2 weeks from start to finish. The siding went up a little quicker but still took about 2 weeks. We had been informed that the contractor was to base his estimate on retaining the structural detail of our house because of the age but he and his workers continuously tried to get us to change our plans to make it easier for them. We went on vacation for 5 days during the construction and the neighbors watching our animals came over one night after dark to find our doors unlocked on our first night away. On the third morning, a Sunday, they called and sent us pictures of a broken window on our house. Nothing was used to cover the window and even though it didn't rain, one of the rooms of our house could have been flooded. We also found out that they removed one of our entry doors and just placed a sheet of particle-board over the opening but left a gap of about 2 inches at the top, again allowing entry of the weather. We also had a huge number of insects in our house due to their "covering" of the door opening. This "covering" remained in place for about 5 working days before the replacement door was installed. They used our tools and household items during their work, some were destroyed and some were lost. At one point the contractor was complaining to us that the replacement of the basement entry took a lot more work and cost "him" more than he had covered in his quote. Near the end of the job, it seemed the contractor wasn't even at our work site, even though he had been for the roofing, siding and windows. We're pretty sure he was working on another job and just sending his workers with very little idea of what they should be doing. Also near the end of the work, after the roofing, siding and windows were up, the contractor seemed to be "cheaping out" on us. The entry steps for the two doors, while serviceable, are very cheaply constructed and fairly flimsy. Some painting was done on the stairs inside our house and the workers painted all of the stairs at one time in the middle of the day. Because they painted all the stairs, they had to be walked on while wet and the paint job, and some shoes, were destroyed. They did not repaint after this happened. I have spoken to others who had similar work done and they stated they thought a month would have been reasonable for the amount of work to be done. Our job took almost 2 1/2 months. We believe a part of this is due to the fact that the contractor and workers didn't show up every day, sometimes missing 3-4 days in a week. At one point during or after the roof was completed they took off almost 1 1/2 weeks for "vacation". All in all their "work ethic" was sorely lacking in our opinion. Between the complaining, length of time job took, "cheapness" of some aspects of the job and other factors (at one point there were workers drinking on the job site, pushing us to change the look of our house to make it easier for them, etc.) we would forcibly inform people to stay away from this group.
Description of Work: Our house is a 200+ year old house in a rural setting. We received a grant from our rural preservation society to have work done on our house. The project was bid out to multiple contractors for the following work: Removal and replacement of entire roof, new siding, 24 replacement windows, minor electrical work (installing two new outlets in a room and GCFI outlets in kitchen), replacement of 2 exterior doors, installation of 3 new screen doors, replacement of entry steps on two porches, installation of small deck on an entry door, some interior and exterior painting and replacement of basement entry.
