Auto Service
Supposedly, they performed a compression check, after which I was told that the timing chain had skipped a gear tooth, and since my car had an "interference" engine (meaning that the pistons would hit the valves in such a case), that serious damage had resulted. Their proof was that 2 cylinders had 1/2 of the compression they were supposed to (90 psi instead of 180). Next, they quoted a used engine for $1000, and $1800 to install, and probably a few hundred more for incidentals, probably totaling around $3500. I had another mechanic check the car, was told that (1) the car (a 1997 Dodge Caravan 3.3L V6) did not have an interference engine, (2) the compression was 150 psi in all cylinders (which was completely normal), indicating that the engine was in decent shape, and (3) all it needed was a tune-up. Total bill, $800, including their diagnosis. This was Hauppauge's third strike. Twice before, they gave me incorrect info. Now, they're out.
