We needed our chimney cleaned and were having a lot of problems with rain leaking into the house and basement which we thought was probably caused by cracks in the chimney.  I called the office and told them we wanted our chimney cleaned and an estimate on repairs to the chimney.  John, owner of J&L, and his assistant arrived on time on the day of the appointment but didn't know anything about having to do an estimate on repairs to the chimney.  They had only come to do the chimney cleaning and said we needed to make another appointment for them to do the repair estimate.  Since he sounded like he really knew what he was talking about and sounded willing to work with us on price, etc, we made another appointment.  Again, he seemed really interested in helping us out and knowledgeable, so even though the estimate was quite a bit more than what we expected, we ended up hiring him to do the work because they were willing to work with us on a payment plan.  That was the end of the satisfaction with their work.  While they ended up doing a very good job and the chimney looks real good, it took them three times as long as he originally said it would, they never showed up when they said they would and frequently only worked a couple hours before leaving for the day.  At one point, he made statements to my husband suggesting that we had to give him an immediate cash payment for some work he hadn't included in the original estimate or he wouldn't continue the work.  We gave him the money but he would not give us a valid receipt and suggested that we shouldn't let any of the other workers know about the transaction. Flora, the office manager/biller/owner, was very short tempered on the phone whenever i tried to get information from her and it seemed like I was a real irritant when i asked for information.
We believe the work John did was of a high quality but it was a very unpleasant experience working with this company.  We wouldn't hire them to do any masonry or chimney work again.

Response from J & L MASONRY
"Well, I would like to say that I don't understand why it took from Sept. 17, 2012 until Jan 1, 2013 to decide that something wasn't right. I also don't understand why we were not contacted ourselves first to try and work this out instead of going public. In any event, we did go there on 8-23-12 to sweep the chimney. It was done and we were paid. As the member said, they had cracks in the chimney. Since they were burning wood, a cracked chimney indicates the possibility of a chimney fire having occurred - at least to a certified chimney sweep. Therefore John, who was not prepared at the time to take the time and use the camera to verify any damage, suggested we return when he could do so. They agreed and we did on 8-28-2012. We were paid for the work three days later. On 9-7-2012 the member signed the contract but did not send the down payment with it. We started the work on 9-11-12 at which time we requested the down payment and were given a check for it. Part of the work we did included a chase cover that would go over the entire top of the chimney. These are custom made. So, when we were able to get the exact measurements that were needed, it was ordered. It takes some time to make the cover and ship it to us, time over which we have no control. September is an extremely busy month for the chimney industry and it could be that the technicians stopped to do a chimney sweep before they got over to the member's to continue their work or they may have had to leave early to go do a different sweep or estimate. Or, it could of been inclement weather causing the work to be delayed. In talking with John he does remember requesting cash for the extra work, however nothing was said about not continuing the work if he didn't get it. A contract is a contract and extra work is extra work. Also, as far as letting employees know about contract amounts and payments made, that is just good business. I would like to address her feelings that I was short tempered. If that is how she feels, I apologize. It comes as a shock though when the majority of customers tell John how pleasant and helpful I am. It seems to me that there is a personality clash for whatever reason. I am glad that they are pleased with John's work."
