The Mad Hand Arts, Graphics & Design, LLC
About us
The Mad Hand is located in the heart of Queens, NYC. It is run bow to stern by our award-winning art director, Jane Denny, with occasional office help. ALL design and artwork is conceived and executed by the art director personally with input from clients. We do not subcontract or outsource. We design for clients all over the world from USA to Australia and Japan, and for almost every kind of market. We handle every project type from web design to concert and convention graphics, CD and book covers, logo and trademark design, marketing collateral of all types, and we are not averse to odd projects, including the occasional tattoo or child's puppet theatre. We are a strongly animal- and environment-friendly company, donating many hours of design time annually to humane awareness campaigns, such as for Rational Animal, the Coalition for NYC Animals, the Ruaha Carnivore Project, and several grass-roots groups devoted to NYC 's homeless cats. An excellent illustrator of animals and wildlife, our art director is also the creator of The Pride (the award-winning reality cat cartoon) starring Crazy Johnny, Emmaline (the little black squirrel who lives in Queens!) and illustrator of The Cats On My Block by Valerie Sicignano, founder of NYC Feral Cat Initiative. Our design fees are $50/hour or a flat rate based on your project description. We require a 50% deposit on the estimate, and the balance paid upon approval of the finals, before delivery.

Many of the photos chosen for the book were very old ( wedding pictures from 1877, for example) and some were faded. Here's where The Mad Hand worked some restoration wonders. She also knew how to alter the lighting on each of the photos so it printed as well as possible. If Jane Denny tells you she can restore a photo, believe her. She will also tell you if there is no good restoration possible.
Needless to say, I have nothing but enthusiastic recommendations for The Mad Hand. The technical print-craft of the work is excellent and the placing of the photos makes sense to the eye as well as to the mind. If you have any graphic design project, you are in good hands with The Mad Hand.
We are a five-member software company developing applications for tablets, and we needed a logo, icon and promotional image for our current music application. We discovered that it can be harder to get five people to agree on artwork than it is to agree on application design and implementation! Jane showed remarkable patience and flexibility as we worked through alternative candidates for our images. She also actively cooperated with us to keep the costs down even as we reworked some of the images several times.
In the end, we were all very happy with the final deliverables. We enjoyed working with Jane so much that we almost regretted finishing the job! Over all, the interaction lasted about two months, from first engagement to final delivery of the digital images.

At the start of the project, Jane and I spoke a couple of times so she could understand the organization and its goals. Jane listened closely and asked questions that helped me focus on what I was envisioning for the bookmarks. Very quickly, she sent a first draft design which was terrific. She incorporated a number of art concepts that added to the messaging and she conveyed what I was hoping for. She followed this design with a second one, equally great, and we made only minor adjustments. Jane helped me evaluate printing companies and walked me through the process of placing the order for printing then she really went above and beyond for me; the printing company had a question and I was on a plane and couldn't respond. Jane stepped in to work with the printing company on my behalf so that the bookmarks would be completed in time for the event. This was a huge help to me and not part of our agreement. I am exceptionally pleased with Jane's design skills and professionalism. I plan on using Jane again for my next project.
The logo presented problems as it is used both in large and very small versions. Jane presented several designs to consider. The slogan had to be legible in a greatly shrunken state, but I prefer the oval shape over the circular one. In the oval, the logo was not readable. Jane showed that she thinks over designs at times she is not "at work" for she had a brain storm during one of these times on how to make the logo fit in a oval, be legible AND suggest the feathers of a goose. (Aunt Rhody of the "old grey goose is dead" fame.) The logo is simply wonderful. Because Aunt Rhody has written many letters to Suzuki parents, Jane cleverly turned the logo into a wonderful letterhead to be placed at the top of these letters.
I highly recommend Jane. She is easy to work with, personable and skilled. She was highly responsive to my suggestions, creative in her own right, took the time to explain the process and to answer my questions. She answers emails promptly. Her resume proves that she does great work. I will use her again if the need arises and it will I have written a children's story, that at some point will need illustrating if I am to publish it.
"Thank you Member, for such a glowing report. I thoroughly enjoyed doing this project, and am so glad to have made you so happy with the work. I often inherit clients from "artists" who have abandoned or disappointed them. And then I have not only on the project at hand, but to overcome the perception that artists are lazy, temperamental, flaky, etc. It's a shame. Because creativity is such a gift and a joy. It should always be used to make people happy. But I am always glad in the end to have found not only a good client, but in most cases, a friend as well. Thanks again, and good luck with everything."
My husband needed a logo for his small business, presently just for business cards, but something that we could also use later when we build a website for his company. We were pressed for time, as he needed the cards within a couple of weeks for a conference he was attending.
I was able to get a good understanding of the way Jane worked from The Mad Hand's excellent website before I even spoke with her. On our first phone conversation, I described my husband's company, his clientele, and the image he wanted to convey, as well as a couple of vague ideas we had about color/design-- very vague. Jane was able to take this information and run with it. Within a couple of days she came back to me with several strong ideas, and from there we went back and forth on a couple of them, narrowing down and then fine tuning until we had something we loved. Amazingly, we ultimately ended up choosing one of the very first designs she came up with, with just a few minor modifications! She even hooked us up with a card printing company and for a small extra fee did the card layout for us (saving us a ton of extra time and energy).
Jane is a consummate professional. She listened to what we wanted, had great ideas, rolled with changes we wanted to make, worked quickly, and just made the whole process so very simple and easy-- and we had been dragging our feet on this project for ages before we took it to her! No problems, also, working with someone out of town (we're in Atlanta, and The Mad Hand is based in NY)- she was always accessible and responsive.
Can't recommend the Mad Hand highly enough!
"Thank you Member for such a complimentary review. I enjoyed this project very much and it was my pleasure working with you. You were the best type of client: clear, articulate, communicative and prompt with review of drafts. Thanks so much for the opportunity to design your logo. Good luck with it and feel free to call in the future with any other graphics needs you may have."
