Jon is a true professional and everything he does is of excellent quality and thoughtfulness.  We are delighted with the results and how quickly the job was done.  He was extremely careful with protecting our plants, house and chimney and used painting tools and techniques to best suit our needs. His price was fair as well.  When you are looking for paint or stain work it's tricky to compare quotes sometimes.  The extensive prep Jon did (the most important part of the job) is not offered by many others.

Our deck looks great- very happy with the results.
Our deck had not been stained in over six years, and was very beat up and had mold in some spots. John and his crew came out one morning for the power wash and got every bit of old stain off down to nice clean wood.  They were scheduled to come back later in the week, but due to rain came the next morning to do the stain. Extremely neat. very professional. Total cost was around $1,300 inclusive of $400 in supplies and taxes,
I would definitely have them back for additional work , thank you!

Couldn't be more pleased with this company and it's owner. All work was done promptly and professionally and well within our time frame. Service contract spelled out all costs and possible costs, and was very easy to understand. No surprises! Will definitely use this firm again.

Jon always does a wonderful job for us.  He has done several interior painting jobs for us.  Each one has been excellent.  He also does our deck on the canal.  He is punctual, uses high quality products, and is exacting in quality of each job he performs.

Master Bedroom and Ceiling painting-trim different color, Master Bath and Ceiling painting-trimp different color, Bath caulking and grout repair, 2nd floor hallway and stairway to first floor, Family Ceiling. Wonderful job, very professional and cleaned up each day. Very trustworthy, was very confortable with John doing the work in my home while I was at my job. He has also cleaned and stained by deck for the past 8 years, excellent work. Price my look high...but I had a cheaper painter last year for my first floor....and got what I paid for....cheap poor job. Truly, you pay for what you get!!! John is worth the price.

Jon was a joy to work with. He took time to explain everything in detail so you had no problem understanding what to expect for the finish product. Both me and the wife think anybody needing similar deck work would be making a big mistake if the did not contact Jon for their deck refinishing.
This will be the second time we had Jon do are deck. Everything I said before still holds true. The deck looks fantastic. Jon will definitely be called the next time the deck is due.

It went great!
Our deck surface was in poor shape and we needed to get it in shape to put our house on the market as soon as possible in the spring.
We have had Jon Cranch (owner of Penfair Painting) do interior painting for us before (including removing wallpaper in 2/3 of our first floor) and were really happy with his work.
Jon started on the deck just as soon as weather permitted. The only issue was that we were having our house re-stained early too. Jon coordinated with our house painter ((Brian McManus) so that they were able to work well together.
John initially aggressively power washed the deck and let it dry a couple of days. He then aggressively sanded the deck, taking many areas down to bare wood. He used a high quality stain (Benjamin Moore Woodscapes deck stain) on the deck. He also spray painted the vertical spindles of the deck railing.
As I had found in the past, Jon is a great guy to work with. He gave me some good advice on some painting projects that I was going to do myself.

Jon arrived promptly when asked to provide estimate. Right off, he explained that he could not provide a fixed estimate for the wallpaper removal and prep because he did not know what he would find underneath. Another contractor DID provide an estimate, but and quot;mentionedand quot; that additional work might and quot;needand quot; to be done after they got the paper off. I preferred Jon's straight honest answer. Jon did provide fixed price per hour ($35) and a range of hours the removal/prep would take. Jon did provide a fixed estimate for the painting.
Jon and his assistant, Steve, arrived promptly at 8am on the appointed day. They organized their activity to minimize the disruption to our daily life (when you are removing wallpaper in the kitchen, considerable disruption is inevitable). Both Jon and Steve were a delight to have around. And they did a d*** good job as well! While they were at it, we decided to have them paint the ceiling in our living room and, at the last minute, had them paint the walls there as well.
In the end, Jon's actual costs for the removal landed right in the middle of the range that he gave me.
I have him coming back first thing in the spring to refurbish our deck.

Jon was very punctual, and he was very professional and did a great job. His prices were on the high side, but I guess you should expect to pay when you get excellent work. All bushes were covered during the process and he cleaned up completely. He put two complete coats of top quality stain on the deck.

It went well. Set-up and clean-up were prompt and professional; Jon seemed unfazed by the challenges of this particular job. His estimate was prompt and fair, and one of the things we liked about it was that he was very explicit about what he would do, how and when he would do it, what materials he would use, and what conditions were necessary. He broke down the price for us by labor and materials, estimated very well how much stain would be required, and aided us in choosing a color and finish that would reduce sun glare. He indicated that "decks are all I do," so consequently, his system for doing them was well-polished. It's been nearly a year, and his work is holding up very well.

.Jon Cranch specializes in deck refurbishment and this is obvious from the equipment and expertise he brings to the task. He was extremely pleasant to work with as were his helpers. Jon was punctual and did an excellent job with clean up after the work was done. The final result was first class and has restored the appearance of the deck to its original state. The final cost of $1850 was probably higher than I could have found elsewhere but that final cost includes an extra $400 for the clear top coat and approximately $350 in materials (stain and top coat). However, I was looking for a high quality result and was willing to pay a bit more to get a really professional job.

The crew of three including Jon were polite and professional. They were EXTREMELY neat. Not even the tiniest drop of stain on our door trim or our house or our patio windows which extend right down to the floor. They probably spent a good 30 to 40 minutes covering everything when they arrived. The deck looks great. I also thought the price was very reasonable for both labor and materials. We are very pleased and highly recommend them.

Had some hiccups with scheduling due to the weather and then drying time of the new mineral spirit-free stain, but John is extremely good at setting and managing the customer's expectations throughout the engagement, and being concerned and responsive whenever there was any types of issues. He called often just to let me know what to expect next. The quality of work is excellent - my 4 year old weather-beaten deck once again looks just like the day I built it!

I have been using Penfair Painting for eight years and also have a friend who uses him. He will do little extra things like power wash my furniture, or the back of the house if it needs it yet always charges the same. He really makes sure to please the customer.
