I had been looking for a new sofa for many weeks. I visited JA on a busy Saturday and was assisted by an owner/family member, She spent time with me and also gave me time to ruminate over upholstery choices, We talked quite a bit about the different categories of upholstery and also about the relative softness/hardness of cushions. She told me that peoplel with arthritis prefer 'harder' cushions, she called them 'park bench' hard, because it's easer to get up from. I told her I wanted really soft, cushy cushions. She sent me home with 3 upholstery samples, and I returned the next day to order the couch, a big purchase for me. I was helped by another owner/salesman, I ordered the couch, without a skirt, and was told it would be ready in 5-6 weeks, which I thought was very reasonable. I made a cash down payment of 25 percent. Having 2nd thoughts about the skirt, I called the next day to ask if it was too late to request the skirt be added, The owner/salesman said, no, it wasn't too late & he'd take care of it. The sofa was ready in 4 weeks and we arranged for delivery. It arrived, with the skirt, and the delivery people helped me move my old couch, with difficulty, to a back room, This was above and beyond. I also paid the balance on the piece. The cushions were park-bench hard. These weren't the same cushions that were on the display sofa. I called the store, reached the same owner/salesman, who first suggested I was mistaken, that I'd changed my mind about the skirt, which of course was true, but irrelevant. Then said that it was possible the manufacturer could have made a mistake, etc., but in any case, "they'll try to make me happy." I could bring one of the cushions in to compare it with what was on the display model, or they could have their delivery people bring new cushions to me. I decided on the latter, and a week or so later, their delivery people came to my house with three red cushions, replaced those cushion covers with mine, and left me with the 'new' cushions, which were indeed softer. But, not as soft as I thought they should be AND they overhung the edge of the couch by about 2 inches. Please note that I did acknowledge, at this point, that I could be wrong about the relative "softness" of the cushions -- it was hard to tell after so much time had passed and I had looked at, and sat on, a lot of sofas while shopping. Since this was a significant purchase for me, and though time is scarce (I work during the week & I'd just bought & moved into a new house, with all its attendant issues), I decided to drive the 20-25 miles to the store to compare my cushion to the display model's. If theirs were considerably softer, I wanted new cushions. And I'd just paid $1,600 for a new couch and wasn't at all sure I had new cushions on it. Maybe I should have called first. I saw the owner/salesman, approached him & re-introduced myself and said that I wasn't satisfied with the cushions yet. He not-quite-yelled back, "I don't know what you want us to do about it." Everyone in the busy showroom stopped what they were doing. I have to say that I didn't hear much of what he said after that. He did pull back from his brazenly obnoxious behavior, but he treated me like a problem customer (which, of course, to him, I was), rather than a respected customer with a problem. I remember him saying that I did change my mind about the sofa's skirt. Yes, I did, and I'm happy with the skirt as it is. He told me that most/a lot of couches have cushions that hang over the edge of the couch a couple of inches. He assured me I was mistaken, but he'd do what he could to make me happy. I never did bring my cushion in to compare it with the original, which could have allayed my suspicions. I just wanted to get out of there and away from him, I'm not proud of wimping out on this, but I have dropped the issue. Overall, I'm pleased with the purchase. I think it's a well-built sofa, the upholstery is good quality and it seems to be well-made/sewn, The cushions are okay. The initial 'problem' could well have been my fuzzy memory of which cushions were on which couch. The REAL problem lay with that owner/salesman. His behavior toward me was offensive and I will never go back there.
