"We have just received this member report and wanted to clarify a few things. For starters, on our Angie’s List page under the heading “Services Do Not Include” it reads: “We do not give free estimates for gutter cleanings or small leak repairs, but we will happily deduct the price of a service call from the total cost of work performed. Please call us to discuss our rates and we will be happy to come fix your roofing issue.” Those contractors who give free estimates, they know what their time is worth. Additionally, we would like to note that when this member called she was told about our service call fee up front, she chose not to use our services and we did not go to look at her house nor did we bill this member any amount of money. She declined our fee, we said OK. This member points out that her house is “5 short exits south” of us. What this member does not point out is that it is not just the cost of going those “5 short exits” – it is rescheduling our other jobs and estimates, getting there, setting up the ladder, going onto the roof, inspecting and assessing the roof, taking measurements, and if the customer wants a written estimate there is additional office work. In addition to all of that, we are a fully licensed and insured company with liability insurance, worker’s compensation, vehicle insurance, we pay taxes and bills just like everybody else, and all of this overhead must be taken into consideration when going to look at a job. As an example, if you were to call a plumber, air conditioner, or refrigerator repairman, they would charge a service call fee for the technician to come out and assess the problem, plus the cost of labor (we had a plumber here yesterday with a $95 service call fee that does not get absorbed by the cost of labor, but added on in addition to their hourly rate). Our time is simply valuable. We take our work seriously and do the right job. Our service call fee is absorbed by the cost of work if the customer chooses to have us perform the work. If the customer would like to have us perform the repair work when we do the call, if we can do it in an hour or two, have the materials and tools necessary to get it done, we will gladly do it when we go out and have the ladders set up already, then the charge is only for the labor and materials used. If it’s a free repair estimate you’re looking for, keep in mind that contractors who give their time away for free know what their time is worth."
County Center Roofing sent a team to our house on the morning that Irene was to strike NY to repair the flashing. They wanted to help us.
They were great on the phone - very cheerful and professional.
They were on time - with a smile and expertise.
They worked neatly and fixed the flashing the first time.
We got through Irene without any water coming in the house.
Background: I live a ranch style home which was poorly designed so that roof in one portion of the house does not have exposure to fresh air underneath. As a result, my roof is likely to fail quicker than most others. I am also in commercial real estate so I called County Center Roofing as well as a commercial roofer I have handling my some of my commercial business.
The Owner of County Center, Vinny, and I went over what the possible options were, including replacing the entire roof, and a more limited scope of replacing the missing shingles and rotten sheathing. As it turned out, the overall roof was in ok condition, so Vinny suggested just making a repair. We discussed the timing for possible work and he mentioned it would take about a week to schedule. We also discussed a pending rain storm in the next couple of days. The other roofer, the commercial roofer said they would show up and take a look at the roof while I was not at home.
The rains came while I was at work and our roof did not leak, which I could not understand. The following morning I went to look at the roof from the outside and I found that someone installed some temporary patches but I had no idea who did it.
Today, County Center Roofing showed up to do the work today I discussed with Vinny, and I asked the worker about the temporary patches. He said that Vinny told him to install it before the rains came.
To me, this is work above and beyond the call of duty, and a sign of contractor who cares about their reputation as well as their customers. I am still waiting for my commercial roofer to get back to me.
"From: Vincent Casolaro 6/24/11 Just saw this post for the first time and believe it deserves a response to complete the incomplete picture made when you only hear one side of a story. Most of The Member’s chronology is pretty much on point, including the part where she states that I found out the manufacturer of the original skylight was now out of business and bought out by another company. The Member didn't mention that I explained to her that it was difficult getting this information and I spent a good deal of time tracking down someone who had the information for me. She also mentions about me changing the price, but didn't explain that I had based my original price on the normal price for replacing a skylight of that size but this new manufacturer had raised the price by $300 additionally and realizing that perhaps I should have checked before trying to move forward, I absorbed half of the additional cost myself, only increasing her price by $150. Subsequently, because of the change in manufacturer and possible changes in skylight sizing, the wholesaler who I was dealing with suggested I re-measure to be absolutely sure. I went back a second time, went up on the roof, and re-measured the skylight. While doing this, I FOUND A BROKEN SLATE, removed the part that had broken off and was lying in the gutter, and brought it down to the ground so it would not fall down and hurt someone. When I next spoke to The Member, I TOLD HER that I found the slate was broken when I was up on the roof. I didn’t break her slate and her comment to the contrary is SIMPLY FALSE. The Member failed to mention that I COINCIDENTALLY HAD REPLACED THE SLATE ROOF ON THE FRONT & SIDE OF THIS HOUSE 25 YEARS EARLIER FOR A PRIOR OWNER OF THE HOUSE. I could see while measuring the skylight that the roof had not received any maintenance since I installed it 25 years ago. It was just the way it was when I finished it except for a couple of slates that ice had moved a little. I guess some of what I do is pretty good. The Member later goes on to say that when she told me she wanted her money back I told her I would mail her back her deposit. What did she expect me to do, tell her no, she couldn’t have it back? I don’t like to argue so I returned her money and canceled the order for the skylight which thankfully had not been fabricated. I spent a lot of time trying to get this right but it was just one of those jobs that wasn’t meant to happen. They happen to everybody once in a while, but fortunately the other thousand people I dealt with that year were happy as well as any previous owners of the house for the last 25 years."
