He then emailed us a written proposal detailing the work to be performed. He indicated that he should be able to start the job probably during the last week of April, first week of May. Then the rains came for days, which I'm quite sure played havoc with their job schedule and we were very understanding of that unavoidable delay to their proposed starting date time frame. Unfortunately we had a personal situation develop whereby an out of town family member was terminally ill and our schedule started to become hectic. We called the office staff and explained our personal situation and asked if there was anyway they could expedite the start of our job. They (Doreen and Kathy) were totally understanding of our dilemna and worked with us and Chris to schedule the job for a few days later. The work crew of three men arrived early and started to work right away, with barely a break. Mind you, this was tedious manual labor of clearing the existing soil of all the debris which resulted from the excavation for the septic system. They were careful to be mindful of the new irrigation hoses and spray heads we had installed (we marked them with little flags) and were very receptive to any input we had on moving the dirt around to low spots. They first hand cleared the area, then rototilled, then leveled, then brought in new topsoil for the top layer, leveled again, and put down plenty of grass seed. The workers were very organized, knew what they needed to do, and planned every step so as not to have wasted time. The foreman said that Chris brought him to the site the night before and reviewed the scope of what needed to be done. Chris had even included instructions about watering for the new seed in his initial proposal so we were all set by the end of that day when the job was finished. Unfortunately that very same night we got news that our family member had passed away and we had to head off to PA for a number of days. We very much appreciated that Chris and his staff worked with us to get the job done without any more delay. It is now about 3 1/2 weeks since the job date and we have a lovely lush green lawn growing on nicely leveled gound. It actually got it's first mowing yesterday. It looks fabulous. We may need to throw a little seed down here and there where subsequent rains took some of it away, but we are totally pleased with the work performed by Chris Mohr and would definitely recommend them to others and to use them again for future work. It was a pleasant experience dealing with everyone from the office staff, to the field workers, and speaking with Chris Mohr himself.
This July day's temperature was more than 90 degrees and living next to the water, there was a stiff breeze from the East that morning. Since the house was essentially empty of residents for that day and thus not requiring any air conditioning, all the windows and slider doors (all screened) were kept open, including some on the second floor. One after the other, seven truckloads of sand were then dumped in an area of sod, about 15 feet from the right front of the house structure where all the windows and slider doors were open. This dumped sand was then taken from this site with a small front loader, on a track on about a 100 feet of sod, to be dumped and spread behind the bulkhead at the back of the property.
Unfortunately, this repeated unloading of sand by the 7 dump trucks and repeated scooping and dumping of sand by the small front loaders caused a significant of sand dust being created and blown around. In our absence and to our extreme chagrin, these particles came in through all the open windows and sliders and coated the house contents including furniture, a piano, the kitchen with utensils, and significantly, the exterior of the house. We were seeing, tasting and breathing sand dust for a while and had to have major cleaning done which included power washing the exterior of the house.
My contention is that Chris never came to the job site before the job commenced as he had promised. With his claimed experience and professionalism, if he had, he would or should, have noted the open windows and warned us of the problems with sand dust blowing all around. He only came to the site when he was asked to do so by me and he did so much later the next day. By then the sand dust fine enough to pass through window screens, had already coated the interior and exterior of the house. He never inspected this problem, as his contention was that it was our responsibility to anticipate sand dust being introduced into the house. I could never ever have anticipated this as I have never have dealt with the dumping of sand. He claimed that we as the homeowners, should have kept the a/c on and windows closed. However he did offer to pay a paltry $100, only for the cleaning of the piano.
With regard to the over charge, I asked him to justify his use of the 235 cubic yards of sand. He claimed that each load was about 35 cubic yards though the trucks used by him herein, apparently could only hold 20 cubic yards each. To this date he has not given me a satisfactory accounting for this discrepancy. Again this was what he had agreed to do and though he denied any malfeasance, he acceding to his overcharge. He has just sent me a refund for 35 cubic yards which amounts to $1035. I had requested a refund for 95 cubic yards (245-140)
In essence, I was purposely given an estimate by this contractor which was excessive to start, then exceeded and overcharged for. Poor professional behavior was exhibited by minimal job site supervision and not taking any responsibility of knowing the possibility of sand dust blowing around inside and outside. I do have one silver lining in this; his workmen did good job in itself!
"First off the job was scheduled and based on prior job, it was moved forward one week. Mr. [removed member name] was made aware of this change and I personally stopped at Mr. [removed member name]'s house to make sure there wasn't a problem. We set the new date and the morning before we started running sand I spoke to Mr. [removed member name]'s wife and explained we would be there for the next 3 days running sand and we needed access to the driveway. She agreed and told me this was not a problem because Mr. [removed member name] was away for 2 to 3 days in the city. The sand was dumped to the left of the driveway and we ran the sand down the left side of the house and dumped it over the bulkhead as agreed. I had no control over the fact that the windows were left open. The scope of the work was reviewed. In 20 years I have never had to tell anyone to shut their windows when sand was being delivered. And if they knew the work was being done, why did Mr. [removed member name] decide to go to the city? Mr. [removed member name] submitted a bill of $100 to me to pay to have his house and piano cleaned, which I paid in good faith. This was the only bill that Mr. [removed member name] submitted. I was at the job 3 times a day to make sure everything was going according to plan. When we started construction of the stairs I was there for 2 days and any questions that Mrs. [removed member name] had I answered. Once again Mr. [removed member name] was not around when the project was going on. The 2 times I was asked to come over to see him, we reviewed the job from his kitchen window because he was unable to access the yard because he is in a wheelchair. We discussed that more sand was needed and I was told to do the job correctly. When the final bill came this is when the problem started with Mr. [removed member name] . I showed Mr. [removed member name] all the tickets from the sand to prove the amount of sand I delivered. Mr. [removed member name] took it one step further and demanded I give him the number of my supplier and he confirmed the amount of sand with them. At this point I thought everything was fine, but Mr. [removed member name] said the job went over budget, out of good faith, I gave him a truckload of sand for free (by refunding him $1035). At that point everything was fine and I was told I would be doing additional work and nothing came of that. Instead of Mr. [removed member name] calling me directly he decided to badmouth me on Angie's List. Prior to this he and his wife were thrilled with the craftsmanship of the stairs going down to his bulkhead and was impressed with the cleanup of my company that you couldn't even tell we were in the yard. We started the job when we said we would start and we were finished in 7 days. I'm never please with negative feedback, but I understand you can't please all of the people all of the time."
The two guys on the masonry job were quiet and professional. The work was completed within one week. Absolutely gorgeous brickwork. A couple of times buddies of the two masons would stop by and visit. One stayed for well over an hour, conversing and laughing loudly in front of the house while the two workers continued to work. I finally had to go outside and ask him to leave. There was a bit of miscommunication in the office about the job, but it was resumed immediately (the next day) after a call to Chris Mohr. I am happy with the quality of work. From estimate to completion, everything promised was done. The front steps/landing exceeded my expectations! People compliment it every day.
The huge number of Leyland Cypresses that line our driveway were pruned, cut (5 feet from top), leveled to form aesthetic perfection.
We highly recommend Chris Mohr and thank him and his staff for an extraordinary job.
