First, I must admit this experience ranks as likely the most exceptional job by a small business that I can remember. One of my biggest gripes with most small businesses, especially contractors, is their lack of business "sense". Typically this comes in the form of lack of communication or attention to detail. Eric Young, the proprietor of Ernz Co Painting stands out for having delivered exactly what was promised yet it was the execution of the service that was nothing short of amazing.
I had been planning to have my barn painted once the new wood had cured. I had met Eric at a local home remodeling show and invited him to provide a quote for this service, which was reasonable. He provided a date to do the work later this summer which was agreeable. A twist to this plan is based on my property sharing a driveway with my neighbor, who is not very nice and decided to put up a fence splitting our properties. Since I live in a small historic village many of the property boundaries encroach very closely to the buildings and in my case the neighbor is allowed to put his fence within 12 inches of my barn. Obviously this would make it difficult to paint the barn due to lack of access to put up the ladders, etc. When I mentioned this new development Eric offered to rework his schedule so his crew could complete the job before the fence was installed. Unfortunately, I happened to be out of town on vacation when he called but that did not deter his willingness to help. I was able to have someone get a color sample from my house which Eric picked up that night. He started prepping immediately and the next morning his crew got to work.
The barn door is never used so it was extremely dirty. His crew scrubbed and scrubbed to get it clean (preparation is the hardest part of painting). Originally, the job was supposed to take 2-3 days. The new wood sucks in the first coat of stain like a sponge and would need a second coat. The board and batton design required spraying into the corners in each direction, and rolling or brushing the overlap. Time was needed to move the scaffolding. Yet they did the entire job in one day. One long hot day. Their attention to detail is impressive because the antique hinges and lantern were protected, and all the trim work was done with precision; there was no splatter or drips or mess anywhere. We got word from family who had driven past and noticed the colorful improvement. My wife and I were highly impressed when we arrived home to find this huge job accomplished so perfectly and quickly. We could not thank Eric enough for all he and his crew had accomplished. Given our predicament with the nasty neighbor (who by the way doesn't live there because the house is derelict) Ernz Co helped relieve a load of stress with the maintenance of our property, which we take great pride in given the historic nature of our house and community.
