The men who came to do the work spent several hours in the basement and then left. After they left we noticed an irritating odor whenever the furnace came on, which I thought might just have been new parts being heated for the first time, but the odor remained. We developed headaches, mild nausea, and tiredness. I called the company back. The man who came said he checked the furnace out, it didn't seem to be drafting properly and he thought that we needed to call a chimney sweep and have our chimney cleaned. Instead I called a friend who is a handyman and also works on furnaces. When he came, he
showed me the areas of concern-- the furnace had never been vacuumed out and was filthy inside, the seal around the door had not been replaced and was letting in air and letting out enough flame to burn one of the labels off the door itself, and finally the exhause pipe from the back of the furnace to the chimney had been left sitting propped on the top of the flange for the pipe to attach to, never hooked up. All the exhaust from the furnace was being expelled inot the basement and house.
I paid the gentleman who found the problems and took the photos of them to redo all the work that E and V had supposedly done and do it properly. The nasty odor went away, and our new carbon monoxide detector did not detect any more carbon
monoxide. I want to say that I took my pictures and my complaints and went to E and V and talked to one of the owners. He
kept copies of the pictures, and he not only refunded my money to them but also paid the cost of having the job done the second time by my friend. At that point I was satisfied in general, but my insecurities about the reliability of the staff at
E and V remain. Not only was one person guilty of leaving the exhaust pipe disconnected, but the person who came to check out the problem totally overlooked that situation also. In the winter you're going to run your furnace if you are told that it is
fine and has just been fixed. I consider that I was fortunate to have someone I could call to check the situation out. What
if I had just been another old lady assuming everything was all right? If I had left the funace on and gone to bed, would I have died of carbon monoxide poisoning? I think I would feel better knowing that the men who actually came and were involved in this situation actually were fired from their jobs for lack of knowledge and poor work ethics.
to impress on them the gravity of the situation they caused.. They did not appear to me to be overly concerned about any of this. Needless to say, I do not want any of them working on a furnace of mine again; I had a new gas furnace installed the following fall and have had no problem with it to date. It was installed by Fire Hoke Heating and Air Conditioning out of the Syracuse area; they were very efficient and the furnace is working well and much less expensively than the oil one did..
