"We mow their lawn on the same day every week unless weather causes us to do it a day early to get ahead of the rain or a day late because of the rain. The lawn is not level in several areas and with the zero turn mowers we use they can scalp areas a bit. The customer has never contacted us concerning the dates we mow or the scalped areas. They have been customers since 2006 and appreciate the work they have given us over the last decade."
I had a problem with lawn treatments being done with no notice as I could not mow the lawn immediately afterward. I called Dan several times before he returned my call and asked that he let me know 24 hours before each service so I could mow the lawn or take care of things I needed to take care of. Dan refused to do this as he said that he couldn't routinely do this for all his and quot;multitudeand quot; of customers. I asked him to e mail me and he refused. He argued with me about this and would not budge. I didn't think this was a major deal and did not ask for anything outlandish. In my opinion the customer service not acceptable.
"Calling individual customers when we do an application is an expensive under taking. I would have to hire someone to call people daily. It would cost thousands of dollars over the course of a season. This would raise my cost of doing business and thus raise prices to my customers. I believe more people would rather have lower prices than have me calling them when I'm coming to service their lawn. I try to keep pricing down in order to give excellent service at a reasonable price. I told [Member name removed] that he could still mow his lawn when I had fertilized but did not believe me. Small grains of fertilizer do not get picked up by the lawn mower and would not disrupt the application in any way. I also stated that if he felt the mower would remove fertilizer when he mowed he could mow it without bagging the clippings. I try to educate my customers, I have over 20 years experience, but I can not make them believe me."
"I had spoken with [member name removed] about his lawn and told him I would come and look at the problem he was having. I didn't write down his question and information in the place I normally do and forgot to look at his issue. [member name removed], I apologize for the over site and understand your poor review. I try very hard to call back and be responsive to all customers. I failed in this situation and will try harder next time."
One area I did specifically ask about was the safety of the chemicals/herbicides/fertilizers around my pets. I have 2 dogs and 4 cats/3 cats that spend some days outside in the yard with me. I did not want a lawn program that would be harmful to my pets. Dan assured me he was an animal lover too, and has 4 cats of his own. He said the application was safe as long as I kept my pets off the lawn during the 24 hours immediately following application.
When you sign a lawn application contract with Dan he provides you with a list of the chemicals used and specific date ranges when the applications are to be done. Well, the time period for our 1st application came and went but no service was provided. I wasn't too concerned as I thought some recent rainy weather may have put him behind schedule but I called just to make sure we hadn't been overlooked. I called today (6/17/13) in the late morning and I was pleasantly surprised to see 2 men from Revelations pull up in front of my house shortly before 4:00 PM.
I quickly rounded up 1 of my 2 cats that was outside, brought in my dogs and my dogs toy that was laying in the middle of the lawn and watched from the kitchen window for my cat that was still outside. Because some of our yard is wooded I was pretty sure he was hiding nearby and out of harms way. While watching for my cat I was also able to watch as the application was applied. The product is a liquid spray and also pellets. These are broadcast by a mobile machine that one man stood on while riding around, similar to a Segway. While my yard is fairly large the area that is actually grass is very small, probably less than 1/6 acre, and it took all of 5 minutes for the application to be put down.
Not an hour before the men arrived I had scrubbed out my dogs small child-size plastic pool and filled it with clean water. The dogs slosh around in the water and even drink the water during the warmer months. The pool is just off the edge of the grass so imagine how shocked I was to watch the man on the segway-like machine zoom pass the pool spreading weed control and fertilizer right into the water!
Minutes later, the men picked up my garden hose and filled their machine with water. They filled 2 water tanks then threw the hose onto the ground and left. I thought I could still hear water so I immediately went outside and found our hose on the ground pumping water at a high rate, and I looked into the pool and could see pellets floating on top of the water.
Shocked is how I felt and I called Dan right away to tell him what I saw. I reached his voicemail so I left a message and he called me back almost immediately. When I explained to him what happened his responses were:
1 - We (Revelations) use the water of our customers to fill our equipment. and quot;We do that all the time.and quot; and quot;None of my other clients have ever raised this as a concern.and quot; I wonder how many of Dan's other clients even know they are providing gallons of water to fill his equipment? I wonder if Dan has ever considered that some of his customers might be on wells and that taking gallons of water from a well can be a problem? I wonder at almost $55 for about 5 minutes of work why Dan's company thinks it's okay take water from clients rather than the company pay for their own water? Perhaps because they just keep getting away with it.
2 - Regarding the water being left on and draining from the hose after his employees left; Dan didn't say much just that it shouldn't have happened.
3 - Regarding chemicals in the dogs pool - Dan said and quot;Mistakes happenand quot; and that if I can see pellets on the water than it must be the fertilizer and this posed no more harm to my pets than the and quot;nitrogen in the air we breathe.and quot; I wonder if Dan would be okay with a little Weed Control plus Fertilizer Application being mistakenly put in his cats' drinking water? Would he just chalk it up to and quot;mistakes happen?and quot; If his cat were to die could he be shrug it off to just a mistake? Now iImagine if that were a child's pool, perhaps your child's pool?
Dan reminded me that he has completed many certifications and attended much training to be able to work with pesticides. Certainly then he understands the potential harm pesticides pose and why accepting that and quot;mistakes happenand quot; is not acceptable in his line of business.
The outcome of my contacting Dan with my concerns was for him to tell me and quot;maybe we (Revelations Lawn Care) just can't meet your high standards and it would be best if we parted.and quot; I agree parting ways is the right outcome. However, if not poisoning pets and not taking water without atleast first asking permission are considered and quot;high standardsand quot; then what kind of service does Dan aspire to provide?
"We fertilized [member name removed] lawn as we would any other lawn we service. She called and complained that we got chemicals in her dog pool. I apologized for the mistake and said we would take better care the next time we came. She said I could have killed her pets and again I apologized and said that I have pets and that I'd never intentionally harm any animal. She didn't seem to be happy with the apology and at that point I said that I apologized and said we'd take better care but unfortunately that didn't seem to be enough. I asked her what she'd like me to do to remedy the situation but she didn't have an answer. I tried my best to rectify things but sometimes you can't make things right when yo make a mistake. We try our very best but mistakes do happen. If a mistake happens I work to make sure it doesn't happen again."
