We like to support local businesses but I wouldn't return or recommend them.
The work provided was sub-standard and expensive.
The problems with her computer were not resolved.
We ended up going to the Geek Squad at Best Buy and purchasing a service contract for about the same money and are very pleased with it.

Response from CHEAP GEEK

"Again, we have no work order or record of ever doing any work for this customer. Like I posted before on another negative review, another computer repair shop moved in right next door to us. The buildings are the same color and are only divided by a parking area. Customers are confused often and ask if we are affiliated with the guy next door???? We also have people calling looking for their repair status..and next door is fixing it..not us. Also keep in mind that for some reason the other shop DOES NOT HAVE a listing on Angie's list, and our customers complain on a regular basis of the bad experiences that they had with the shop next door. So when looking, we are the only repair shop listed for Burnt Hills. We think this customer is confused to where he had his repair done...it definitely wasn't done here!! All our work has a work order slip when dropped off. When the repair is picked up a copy of the work order is made and given to the customer as a receipt. It is then entered into our data base...so it is a two step process. This customer is not in our database or in our paper file. Again, he received bad service from someone else and we are getting the blame for it!! Unless he can come forth with a copy of his work receipt showing we did the repairs,..then we can safely say he is NOT one of our customers. Perhaps if he had brought it here, instead of maybe thought he did..I'm sure he would have received MUCH better service. We always stand by our repairs!!!"

During the process of virus removal and software restoration, apparently much more work was involved than was first reflected by the initial cost estimate.  The infections went deeper into the software systems than had been thought, and we needed some obsolete programs, eg Corel, restored.  We believe that the final price was fair for the extra effort expended.  Also,  we did not have to change any of our techniques for using the computer;  the change was "seamless" or "bumpless" for resuming our use of the computer.
What we learned from this experience is that various anti-virus measures we had installed did not protect our computer completely from viral infection.  Now we are more careful about accepting e-mail and other possible sources of potential problems.  We may have to have the computer software cleaned up more often than once in 12 years.
We think it pays to consult such a fine and honest professional;  and if necessary to wait longer for and pay more for a better result.  The higher cost for service, although not welcomed at first, now seems to have been a good investment.   The machine has been working well for five months.

They found the issue quickly and fixed it. The laptop has been operating properly since.
Response from CHEAP GEEK

"We do have a work order for this customer. Our tech called him and asked how it was working..and he replied great!! Now for his prior complaint, we DO NOT have a work order for it...so we can safely assume that we were not the shop that worked on it. Keeping in mind, that there is another computer repair shop that moved in next to us. Our buildings are the same color and only separated by a driveway and parking area. Many, many times customers have come into our shop and asked if we were affiliated with the guy next door! On many occasions, customers have pulled into his driveway, only to turn around and come into ours when they realized they were at the wrong shop. I also wonder why if we did such a bad job on this mac..why would he come back to us for another repair?? I really am not happy to take a bad rap for work that was not even done in our shop."

I elected  to contact malwarebytes  ---  Provider gave me the names of two companies and that solved my problem.

Some improvements made, but far from a complete fix. Only solution offered to achieve a complete fix was to reformat the hard drive. Facility was filthy and cluttered. Most (if not all) of the staff were chain smokers. The place absolutely reeked. A resident dog deficated on the floor in the middle of the customer receiving area while I was dropping off my PC. The repair was only a partial fix.
Response from CHEAP GEEK

"This customer's computer was infected badly from going to undesirable web sites. The only sure fix was to wipe it out and start again to remove nasty infections. He refused to repair. Our facility being filthy??? We have a weekly cleaning service and have a LOT of daily traffic coming through our shop. Cluttered?? we have so much work, so there are a LOT of computers and parts in the shop. Chain smokers??? Does he know this for a fact?? Dog defecating?? Give us a break!! This customer is way out of line! He needs to clean up his own act, and stay away from adult sites, before making such untrue statements about us! There's always one no one can please.!! Please make your judgement based on all the A reviews..the majority wins."

They ran software diagnostics for several hours to identify problem and then fixed software.  Took less than a day to fix.  They also said if it happened again to just call them and they would talk me through the fix (my wife is a computer specialist and she could not find the problem).  Another company wanted $90 just to look at the laptop.

I dropped off my netbook and laptop for quotes and repair. They called me the same day with quotes to repair each item.  Thy repair estimate on the laptop was $75 to load on new software. The repair for the Netbook was $100 for a new screen. We decided to repair both. They called me the next day to tell me the laptop hard drive was damaged and they could not load the software. A new hard drive would be $250. We decided not to repair the laptop. The netbook was two days later.  They charged $75 for the screen and $25 to install it . They only charged me $25 for the service diagnosis on the laptop we did not repair. They were very prompt and they contacted me several times with updates. I would recommend and use them again

Computer was totally locked up.   I was unable to sign in to windows or access any files.   I called Cheap Geek and explained the problem.   She indicated that the operating system may need to be reinstalled and quoted me a price.  I dropped off the computer for repair.   I was contacted after about one week and advised they had spent hours working on the computer but were unable to correct the problem.   Therefore, the only solution was to reinstall the operating system and back up my files.  The repair was completed in a few days and I was called to pick up the computer.   It worked for about a week and then suddenly froze up again and would not boot up.  I called the office and spoke with a technician who told me to bring it back and they would fix it at no additional fee.  I was advised it had another infection and they recommended a maleware program that I should download immediately before using the computer again.  I did that and have had no further problems.    I was very pleased with the Cheap Geek and would recommend them for computer repair and reasonable prices.
