When my husband and I purchased our home, it was filled with wall-to-wall carpet, but we knew hardwood floors were underneath. Prior to moving in, we ripped up the carpet, padding, and all of the staples to reveal hardwood floors in near-perfect condition. There was only one dark stain in a bedroom, and Robert included the repair of that stain in his price quote (to repair it he had to remove the old red oak flooring and add in new flooring to match--the repair is absolutely seamless). I didn't want polyurethane on my floors because I had heard horror stories about the smell lingering for months afterwards, and I also didn't want super shiny floors. Robert said my fears about the smell were exagerated, but he was happy to do the oil/wax combo instead as it is an extremely durable floor finish. Since I had never seen floors treated that way, he even offered to show me the wood floors in his own home which had examples of polyurethane (done by one his competitors who only did one coat; Robert normally does three coats of poly) and also the oil/wax combo. I took him up on his offer and he was extremely professional in showing me around his home and pointing out the different examples of finishes. One of the benefits of the oil/wax treatment is that if a certain area that gets more wear needs to be touched up, it's possibly to just buff on a new coat of wax just over that area without refinishing the entire area; with polyurethane you'd have to sand it all down and completely reapply, meaning the whole room would have to be redone. That was very appealing to us. Once we eventually chose Robert, we gave him a key to the house and he worked every weekday until the job was finished. He was extremely clean (although it is a dusty job and you'll have to wipe down any horizontal ledges afterwards) and extremely detailed. He added red oak quarter round molding in every room and it looks fantastic. The floors have held up beautifully, but be warned: if you go with oil/wax, then you can't get any moisture on the floors. Not a problem for us since we don't wear our shoes inside, but just a warning. Also, the floors are very slippery, but they look great. I have used them in the past as well. They know what they are doing. I have an old house and they know how to deal with the problems in an old house.

Fantastic. I had a good impression of Cameron Jas when Bob visited to view the site. He was the fifth of five contractors I interviewed. He was the only contractor whose only comment was that he'd like to mill a custom 5.5" bull-nose piece for the hallway-to-staircase transition, because the 3.5" bull-nose piece that Armstrong/Bruce sells wouldn't support people's weight and would loosen over time (plus it would look cheap and tacked-on). When I awarded the job and Bob and Ted showed up to do the work, their professionalism completely impressed me. They've got years of carpentry and flooring experience, so they've already seen and resolved any problem you'll ever have with your floor. Bob and Ted are the right guys for your job. And my custom 5.5" bull-nose piece looks amazing.
