Contracted and done:
Paint walls and floor.
Left contractor with swatches for the off-white and the blue for the bed alcove. The only swatch they didn't lose was the floor color. Everything is painted a plain white that was not my choice, the bed alcove is not painted at all. Painted ceiling which I'd said he didn't have to do and wasn't expecting. (Somehow the extra work he kept telling me he did and didn't have to ? cement at the bottom of the outside stairs, painting the ceiling in a color I didn't chose ? doesn't make up for the problems with the work contracted for that was done poorly or not done at all.)
He didn't tape or caulk, everything is painted white including the top of the electric baseboard, all electric plates, even black electric cords, all pipes both copper and steel. Paint sloppily applied, floor paint was coming up a week later, paint splashes on the posts, baseboards, floor, rubber mat in kitchen. Any nail or hook or cord was not removed or unplugged, but painted white. Painted over foam pressed into holes in the ceiling, did no patching. Painted the long silver vent pipe white, didn't paint the wall above it.
Point and seal brick wall.
What pointing he did was done with gray cement and looks awful.
Replace back window.
Okay
Hang new front door, replace entry wall with insulated wall, paint.
Chose door I never would have approved and which coop board now requires be replaced. Did find good matching paint for outside. Wood trim on entry wall has to be moved because it's placed so the gate can no longer be locked closed.stair rail wasn't replaced, I had it done, as I need it to manage the stairs.
Add doors to storage area in front.
Okay, but still have to be finished, aren't trimmed.
Bathroom. Replace tile floor with tile I provided, replace built in shower with shower stall.
An ugly and lousy tile job.Tile on top of old tile, many new pieces cracked and coming up. Was told splash couldn't be done, as discussed and for which I provided tile, informed it's the wrong kind of wall to tile. Existing brick shower border built up and plastered, painted white, stack of glass bricks added, one of which fell off and smashed. Shower floor tiled on top of existing tile, put in a new plastic drain cover. Not shower stall in contract.
Light switches.
Combination switch with 2 plug receptacles which had to have removed as it's illegal to have switch next to plug outlets like that. Added 2 pipe conduits, new ceiling fixture and lamp with switch next to plug outlets. New ceiling fixture was wired illegally, the old fixture didn't have the proper cover, all of it had to be taken out and a single switch added to the existing ceiling fixture as in contract.
Did not do the other 2 switches in the contract, opened existing covered box, remains without cover.
Contracted and not done:
- Bed alcove: shelves removed and walls painted.
Told did not paint bed alcove because color clashed with floor. Later I was told the swatches were lost. - Murphy bed built
- Plexiglas in frame installed in front of large front window to keep out drafts
- Switch for light over bed, switch for light in closet
- Rubbish removed ? it's all piled up in my backyard
I got back at 6am Jan 5. The toilet had not been replaced, the bathroom floor wasn't finished, the shower wasn't replaced. I spoke to contractor and was told they don't work on Fridays. I took a shower and the bathroom was flooded. I called Sunday. They agreed to come Monday.
The contractor and plumber worked Mon-Thur. I was upstairs at a neighbors and still contractor made choices without talking to me, doing bad electric work that I had to pay to have removed.
Saturday evening I sent a message asking him not to come Sunday. No one called Monday morning, despite my emails and messages. At 1pm, I got a text saying they had been in meetings with inspectors since 7am and someone would call me after 2. Contractor called at 6pm, and proceeded to yell at me for 20 minutes about how I treated him, how I made him feel. He said he couldn't waste any more time on me and would come one more day on Friday, his day off, he'd bring a check for $750 to cover the $500 I gave him for the door and wood, and for not doing the bed alcove work. It wasn't worth having him come back to do more bad work.
Wednesday morning I sent an email saying I was ending the project, asking them to mail the check and my key to my address. I haven't heard back from them.
It's clear what is done and what isn't, it's a fact they were several weeks late and did not complete the work while I was gone, and choices were made to do things other than we'd agreed on without consulting me. How could I have known there were no additional workers with expertise in their own areas which is my understanding of a contractor ? and they do claim to have a staff of 10 on their angieslist page.
Before the complete breakdown in communication, they both asked over and over did I like this that they'd done, did I see this or that ? never addressing why they didn't finish the work or mistakes I pointed out. When I asked about the sloppy paint job, I was told, No problem.
My unfortunate experience with New York Craft Construction has been One Big Problem.
