This morning I had a very poor experience with this company. I had heard about this company from an ad they ran on NPR so I called and spoke with the owner. He had me go through a detailed quote, listing out each item we had to move from our 1 bedroom apartment. Everything was listed and I called to confirm with him 7 days prior. We agreed on a price and move time. I received the quote confirmation via email. The movers showed up on time (early infact). There were 4 men. However when they came into the apartment, they started checking things off the list. After spending 2-3 minutes in the apartment the leader of the bunch asked how much the tip is going to be. I responded that the owner told me 15% should be an appropriate tip (I had asked him about this since I was actually unsure). But more importantly, how can they ask this even before the move has started? They then said that the flat rate that was quoted wouldn't be enough to cover the move. I asked why not, it is a rate I was quoted and I had listed everything completely to the owner, before I received the quote. They said that this was a much bigger move and that it would take more people to get this done. Again, I'm perplexed, its a 1 bedroom apartment and there are 4 fully capable men - Why are more people needed? Their counter was that all of my furniture is very high end and that additional wrapping in blankets would be necessary. I'm glad they recognized my furniture is nice. It is of the Crate and Barrel type. And I do want to make sure that it is treated well in the move. However, there are 4 men here, its 11am so there's a full day ahead of us, and, most importantly, we have an agreement and contract in writing (email). They went back down to the truck to call "the boss". +15 minutes later they came back up and told me they didn't want to do the move. I argued for a moment (hey, its the end of the month, my lease ends tomorrow, and, again, we have a contract!) however this was frivolous. I then called the owner myself and this is where how that went: He told me that this is a much bigger move than originally quoted. I told him that each item was listed and the quote was based on this. He said that it was my fault that I didn't tell him that my furniture was super high-end. I said I am not a professional mover and I didn't even know to mention that my furniture is high-end or low-end. It was really his responsibility to ask these types of questions. He never owned up to it. It went back and forth for awhile. He responded with a solution to do the move tomorrow instead with a 65% increase in cost (original quote: $725, new quote: $1200). I told him that I had no interest in doing business with him anymore. What's terrible is that I had told him that I have a few very nice pieces that will need to be well taken care of and he said not to worry because they wrap everything well. Regardless, a move is a move, and I'm trusting the mover with my property - whether it be $25 microwave or $10,000 art piece. End of story: Now I'm S.O.L. and need to find a new mover to move me by tomorrow (31st of the month, which is ridiculous). At the end of the day, it seems they just tried to pull more money out of me. To me I would have been happy to pay more for the move if that is fair, however I was not going to do so with this company given the aforementioned conflict. My viewpoint: I was willing to go over and beyond to support a company which associates itself with NPR and claims to actively pursue "green" interests. I even told the owner this and that I am happy to pay a premium to do so. The original quote was ~20% more than opposing quotes. In regards to one of their "green" philosophies, they supposedly use all biodiesel. However, they pulled up in a Budget Rental truck. I'm pretty doubtul that is Biodiesel. One of their other things is that they claim to only use plastic bins for packing (I hadn't scheduled them to do any packing since we did it all ourselves). But, I looked in the back of their Budget truck and it had a bunch of empty cardboard boxes instead. The whole thing seems like a farce. Not only did they not seem "Green" but the situation left a real bad taste in my mouth. I would recommend against doing business with this company. Their intentions are good, however, execution was poor...In my opinion they're shakers, not movers.
