With regard to my experience, I called Iceberg Mechanical to service four HVAC units, hook up a Nest thermostat to one HVAC unit, provide me with a quote on replacing the motor of a unit (or replacing the entire unit) and look into a leak on a unit. When the technician arrived, he informed me that there was no servicing that could be done on the units (which I later found out was not true - he could have at least replaced the filters), that he would get back to me on whether they could hook up Nest with my unit, and that they would send me a quote for fixing the broken unit. With regard to the leak, when he opened the cover to the HVAC unit, he noticed that a piece of felt was stuck against the drip pain and pulled it out - which took about 5 seconds. All in all, the visit by the technician took approximately 15 minutes and the owner of the company agreed to waive the $250 diagnostic fee given that no actual work had been done and they would essentially just be providing me with quotes for future work.
I then communicated back and forth with Linda, the office manager, to try to get information on connecting the units to Nest. This took quite a bit of time on both our parts during which it became very clear that Iceberg did not have the requisite experience with installing Nest with my type of HVAC unit. Ultimately I contacted another HVAC specialist who had previously done work in my building and that specialist easily installed Nest for me. Iceberg also sent me a quote for fixing the broken unit - the quote was comparable to the cost of replacing the entire unit, so I asked Iceberg to provide me with options for replacing the unit entirely. I never heard back from them on the options and our communication ended there.
A couple months later, I received an email from Iceberg stating that I was past due on payment of the $250 diagnostic fee and that they didn?t charge me this fee because they were expecting to come back and replace my unit. I was very surprised by this fee given that they had originally agreed to waive it and no work was actually performed; I also never guaranteed that I would be hiring them for the replacement but had only requested an estimate. Furthermore, they had dropped the ball on providing me with options for replacement.
When I called the office manager to contest the charge, she argued that she had spent significant time researching Nest for me which, while I?m sure this is true, was required by their lack of experience with Nest and my units, as evidenced by the fact that the other HVAC specialist I hired didn't need to do any research in order to install Nest for me. I acknowledged that while I appreciated the effort that she had expended, their business model doesn?t permit them to charge me for this time. She also argued that they had ?taken apart? my unit to find a leak (which was not at all true unless opening the cover to a unit constitutes ?taking apart?) - as an aside, the technician had needed to open the unit in order to record the model and serial number for purposes of providing an estimate for replacement of the unit.
Ultimately though, the office manager stated that the waiving of the diagnostic fee was only done with the understanding that I would be providing them with further business for replacing the units and that I had somehow led them to believe that they were guaranteed this future business. In NYC, it?s common practice to get several estimates before hiring a contractor for a job. Given their lengthy experience in the city, I would assume they were well aware that I would be getting other estimates and that they were not guaranteed my business. Furthermore, I was never told that I would be charged for the diagnostic fee if I decided not to hire them, and I had understood their waiving of the fee to have been done as a gesture of good customer service demonstrating that they weren?t going to charge customers when no actual work was done. I asked to speak to the owner but she refused to allow me to speak to him. She indicated that she had nothing further to say on this and hung up on me! Customer service and professionalism are clearly not priorities for this company.
As a matter of fact, I have not yet hired a contractor to replace my HVAC units, but I will assuredly not be hiring Iceberg Mechanical.
"Our company's policy is as follows, there is a diagnostic fee for every repair service call we go on regardless of the time spent at the client's home. All of our customers are informed of this fee prior to the appointment. Mrs. [member name removed] was aware of our policy and proceeded to schedule the appointment. The nature of the call was to service one of her 20 + years PTAC unit which had a water leak, and to perform preventative maintenance on the other units. We were unable to check all of her units because one of her bedrooms were occupied. She asked our technician if a Nest thermostat can be installed on one of her units. Due to the age of the units I called the manufacturer to make sure this was possible. I was told due to the age of her units 20+ years old they did not come with a control board or wiring, therefore the Nest thermostat could not be installed unless these parts were purchased and installed. She insisted it could be done because one of the units in her building had a Nest thermostat installed to it, she did not know the age of that unit she was referring to. We emailed her quote along with the diagnostic fee included in the price. She was told we would be sending her a quote which would have the diagnostic fee included because she refused to pay the fee at the time of service. She never moved forward to have the quote, therefore we sent her a bill for the diagnostic fee which was now outstanding. Mrs. [member name removed] then proceeded to ask us about our Angies list coupon which specifically stated at the time "5% discount on new installations" She was told if she wanted a FREE estimate we would have to set up an appointment with our residential salesperson."
After about 45 minutes, he started working on the thermostat. He was unfamiliar with the wiring in the existing thermostat and was ultimately unable to install the Honeywell thermostat because he couldn't figure out where the wires should go. So, I was left with an HVAC unit that seemed to be working ok with a dirty filter and the old thermostat. Because of how late he arrived, I had to cancel a work meeting at 12:30 and I didn't even get a new thermostat.
After this experience, I went out and bought the Nest thermostat instead. After about 2 minutes on the phone with the Nest customer service, they were able to figure out the wiring of the old thermostat and even gave me a picture showing me where all the wires should go. I am wondering why Iceberg couldn't figure out the wiring after an hour. I wound up installing the Nest myself.
Because Iceberg hire really good people who are specialists in their different areas I knew the work would be of high quality. And best of all it was well coordinated by the same guy who estimated so he took responsibility for the work promised. Any isse was dealt with speed and there was no upselling. Bestof all the workers were friendlyt and respectful and always cvered their feet and worked around us.
I would recommend them wholeheartedly. In this world you get what you pay for. I think on relfectionn that I go tmore. And the est part of it is that during the cold snap we have just had my wife and I were as toasty as we were promised. Made a change from our usual winters in this Victorian.
Gotta say these guys are top-notch professionals. I rarely take time to write reviews but after reading so many here I figured it was only fair to take the time when I have good (or bad) experiences.
We just had a whole-house, ductless, split system installed (Mitsubishi) and we could not be happier. From proposal to installation I found everyone I dealt with to be competent and friendly. The installation was smoother than most in-home installs I've experienced and though they estimated a 4 day installation it only took 2 1/2 days. I dealt primarily with Joe and found him to be very customer service oriented and extremely responsive.
A man named Leo ran the job. Leo and crew were clean, quiet, and conscientious about keeping my home as clean as possible when they left (and it wasn't' that clean after a major renovation, this being the last thing we did). It was necessary to move the compressor after they installed it and they did so with no complaints (sort of my fault for saying it was OK where they first installed it but the spouse insisted they move it to a better location on our back wall - what do I know about these things?) and in less than 30 minutes. Joe and Paul appear to be the managers/executive-decision-makers and while we did have some minor money negotiations at the end, they were resolved easily and professionally.
The highlight here is that we are enjoying the best AC we've ever enjoyed anywhere! I am running all units at temps of 77/78 - way higher than the old window units, and much cooler/quieter. One unit cools the entire first floor (we have a pretty open floor plan though) quietly and cleanly. WOW. We should have done it a long time ago! Can't speak yet for the heating ability but if I can throw out a few radiators, leaving just 1 or 2, I will be delighted. Lets see what winter brings; stay tuned for an update to my review in a few months when its snowing outside!
If you are even contemplating one of these systems for your home or apartment - do not hesitate to ask Iceberg for a proposal. I have another quote - in writing - from another company as mentioned before - it was 10% higher than Iceberg's and we knew the owner!
My wife referred to one of the other providers' representatives as "dumb and dumber," which didn't bode well. However, because they were cheaper, we called them back, they adjusted their low quote upward by two grand. At that point it was no longer worth the risk.
The other guy who was in the running took weeks to get back to us. Several times.
In the end, we decided that we liked Paul's attitude the most, anyway. He said "we do each place as if it's our own," and indeed, the finished product looks pretty nice. I'm very meticulous and was a bit disappointed that the line hide had to T between the units, I'd hoped that it would run up the side of the house in one straight line.
However, the end result looks pretty nice and works really well. Overall, I'm happy with our decision to choose Iceberg.
