that first job went fine, but then i was paid via check, which costs me 30%+/- in taxes. for the sake of the relationship, i did not make a stink about it, as the boss was handing me my next assignment. this was another kitchen, this one for a contractor that they worked with often, so they were giving him a great deal, and didn't want to spend a lot of time (read: money) on the job, much less design. not that i was doing any design - my job entailed merely interpreting the design intent of the boss-man, and drawing the technical details so that the client knows what to expect, and the guys on the shop floor know exactly what they're supposed to build. i submitted that job, along with an invoice, in the same manner as the first. i heard nothing for two months, and finally, when i started calling, i didn't get the callback - i got excuses. i complained to some mutual friends and a few weeks later, i got a vague e-mail about why my product was unusable and that they had every intent to pay me for my time, but that things were tough, and i would need to come to some compromise with them. no way. baloney. there was nothing different about this job, except that they were under financial pressure to do this guy a favor, while the economy was tanking. i still need to heat my home & power up my computer. almost 2 years later, i still have no check. i don't know if they make good cabinets, but if they're willing to stiff their freelance subcontractors, i wonder what other corners they'll cut...
