When I called Big Apple Moving, I was put in touch with Joe, who i think is the manager at Big Apple. Joe more than patient with our concerns and questions plus always made us feel that the move would go smoothly even though our experiences before this were not so wonderful but, after all, he was right.
They delivered more than enough of the right packing materials before hand for what was needed and we were given immediate credit for all of which went unused. The tape alone was the strongest I've ever used.
As anxious as we were on moving day and the days right before, within the first 15 minutes of Big Apple' movers' arrival our nerves were calm and we were able to relax a bit. These guys were polite, had a positive attitude and the moving of our things did not stop for a moment until everything was on the truck and the doors closed. We almost couldn't believe our eyes.
As an aside; we made sure to provide the guys with a variety of soft drinks/ bottled water (no alcoholic beverages) and some treats that were gladly accepted during the move (suggest everyone do the same).
They provided plenty of protective covers for everything that needed it, eg; large TV, furniture, etc.
Another amazing thing was that the moving truck arrived at our new place a few minutes BEFORE we did and that was with plenty of traffic; we were certain we'd have to wait for them, lol.
The move into our new place went just a quickly and smoothly as the move out of our previous place, these four men just never slowed down and by the time everything was in the apartment, placed just where we wanted them they removed all the packing material we no longer needed and it almost looked as if we had been living there for a while before they left. Also, there was absolutely no damage to any of our things unlike the all of the other moving experiences with other companies before this.
Basically, Big Apple Moving provided the best moving experience i have have even had and I have had numerous moves in the past, some of which were far less than positive. Our neighbors across the way in the same size place with a bit less furnishings than us told us later that they were surprised how quickly our movers got everything settled in and told us about their moving company (no to be mentioned here) that gave them a lower estimate than what we paid, however, they ended up paying over $400. more than we did along with damaging their mirror and end table which they have still not been compensated; they are furious.
I encourage everyone anticipating a move to give they guys a call, you will not be disappointed.
"Thank you so much for your review. Joe"
Joe seemed like a very likable guy and gave us a nice, professional, proposal and a reasonable estimate. Unfortunately, the service they provided was far from what we anticipated. First, the movers got to our home on time except for the foreman. When he finally came, the movers worked very quickly; too quickly, trying to catch up for lost time. We lived in an apartment building, so I didn't watch them loading the truck, but when we went down to the truck and asked if they could put some small things in the truck that we couldn't fit comfortably in the car, the foreman refused; telling us that the truck was full. When we got to our new home (about an hour away), we had to wait another two hours before the movers arrived. When they finally came and unloaded, they put the boxes, which were clearly labeled, anywhere they felt like it. So some kitchen boxes ended up in the attic, bedroom boxes in the basement, etc. I've moved three times before this move and always packed things myself. In those three times, I only had one item broken; a salad plate. I packed this time as well, and most of those things survived, but they managed to break a piece of china (which they didn't even move, but were too lazy to move out of the way while they were staging. They also broke a waffle maker, and they broke a lamp (which they insufficiently wrapped.
Joe wasn't so nice when we contacted the office to complain. He finally offered to send us $100. We agreed, but then they faxed us a release for us to sign that we would not complain to BBB or make any other complaints against them. Needless to say, we did not sign; and did not receive the $100 (which was a joke anyway, since the value of the items broken was about $500).
"Big Apple Moving, I think, moved this customer 7 YEARS AGO! and they lodge a complaint now? 7 years later? Do I have to say more? I have no way to defend myself. I want to say to Angie's list, that because (if) this job was done 7 years ago, it should be placed behind my 17 "A" reviews I had in a row, all jobs done after this one. I also looked up on wikipedia, why there is a statute of limitations. "The purpose and effect of Statutes of Limitation is to protect defendants. There are three reasons that support the existence of Statutes of Limitation, namely: (a) that a plaintiff with good causes of actions should pursue them with reasonable diligence; (b) that a defendant might have lost evidence to disprove a stale claim; and (c) that long dormant claims have more of cruelty than justice in them""
"I don’t like excuses but for many reasons I find it best to give the other side of this story. Firstly, I was not lazy. member called my company at the end of the month wanting to move (in a few days) at the end of the month. My company was so busy that by the time I could get to member's home to give him an “in home” estimates, his move date would no longer be available. I told member this. Member had the opportunity not to use my services because I could not give him an “in home” estimate. Then why did member book with my company anyway you ask? Because all the other moving companies he called were already booked! I only had one more truck available. I explained to member that we work by the hour and regardless of a phone estimate or an in Home estimate, I get paid for the hours it takes to complete his job. The job would not have cost less if I gave Mr. Montana an “in home” estimate. It was a tough phone estimate with packing, moving supplies and moving charges. I did the best I could. I did not need to fool, lie cheat or lowball member to get his job. I turned down over fourteen jobs after he booked with my company for May 31st. The job was not almost 50% more than the estimate. It was 25% more than the estimate. The job became a two day job because the building he was moving into had an elevator 5PM closing that we were not informed of until the day of the move. We would have worked past 5PM (as we have done many times in my 34 years in business) to complete his move in the “promised” one day timeframe. We can’t move unless the building allows us to move. He does not mention that I did not charge him the travel time for the second day of his move. If one of my men said “this would not have happened if we gave an in home estimate”, he did not mean the job would have been less expensive. He meant that the estimate might have been more accurate and therefore member would not have had the additional 25% surprise concerning the final cost of the move. I know this does not sound right but member was lucky to get any good mover (which we are) with such short notice. This is not said with an attitude, it’s just a fact. As far as wasting any time with member's move, that’s just not true. If we use one man or fifty, we are professional, quick and above all, honest. Member never called me to say how unhappy he was. I wish he would have. You don’t try to fix something unless you know it’s broken. What do I have to say to member? I’m sorry you feel I let you down."
"First I want to say I am not unfamiliar with people with disabilities. I was in a “health class” as it was called back in the 50’s, and had the wonderful experience of growing up with people who were “different”. I was different too. I was in that class, with one teacher from the 2nd grade until I started High school. These were some of the best times of my life. You also learn that just because a person has disabilities it does not make them a good, kind person. People are people. I was called by the MS Society to help this customer move. I gave the Multiple Sclerosis Society a flat guaranteed price based on the list of items supplied and the fact that the customer would be completely packed and ready to move. When we arrived, the crew supervisor called the office to say that the customer was not even close to being prepared to move. Because of the nature of this job, I told my men to do whatever had to be done. We would complete this job for the price quoted even though we would be supplying moving supplies for free and working much longer than anticipated. We did his move for the exact price quoted to the MS Society. Here is the real story. This customer had another company scheduled to move the machine that helps him get in and out of bed. This is not a small machine. In fact, it is quite a large machine and was NOT included in my estimate. The truck was packed with so much furniture, boxes and miscellaneous that we couldn’t fit anything more. I told this customer that, if he wanted, I could come back the next day to move the machine but he would have to pay for it. We moved the machine the next day and the customer was livid that we would charge him anything more than the original quote to the MS Society. He was angry that he had to pay for anything on his own. At one point, the MS Society got on the phone with him during the move and told him that if he did not stop his inappropriate behavior that they would not help him in the future. This customer states we put his furniture in the van and held it hostage is a boldfaced lie. He says we charged him more money just because we could, another lie. I went out of my way to try to help this person. I moved much more then quoted and helped him pack too. He repays my kindness with this review. This customer should be ashamed of himself."
"Thanks for the review [Member name removed]."
Maybe this was not a good representation of the service provided by Big Apple normally, but at the very least the crews could have been better scheduled that day.
Our building got evacuated, we had water damage etc etc etc....
Long story short - these guys were unbelievable great! Very flexible and super affordable.
I can't recommend them highly enough.
When we got evacuated, we couldn't finish packing. We were able to return to the building on the day of the move.
They came in and gave us a whole lot of boxes to use at no charge.
Really nice people that understood how stressful this whole weekend was for everybody.
