lI worked closely with Jim Hill for two years and it would be impossible to list here what we did together to get this project done. The fact that we remain good friends is a testament to our enduring the best and worse of conditions and stayed focused on the end result. We started by working the design (the easy part in retrospect) to permits, to asbestos issues, OHSA requirements, lots of inspections, soil tests, surveys, waivers, paperwork, more paperwork, etc. Jim secured my Certificate of Occupancy and the entire process was a bear. I'm just a simple homeowner that needed extra room on a house for my son's family. Any construction project in NYC is wrought with nonsensical requirements, apathetic city examiners, thieves at every level of city government, etc. If you want to do it the right way and still have your integrity in tact, then choose Jim Hill. Jim Hill is honest and intelligent, He is a good communicator and has always answered my many calls and e-mails in a timely way. My family is now enjoying the additional 1100sf of space and I thank Jim for hanging in there when things got really tough with my deceptive contractor. I will forever be grateful - luckily Jim does not scare easily!
Description of Work: I worked with Jim Hill for the better part of two years. He designed a complete additional story roof raise for me. Jim's design work maximized the floor space and he utilized some creative concepts to take full advantage of some project hurdles and limitations. Early on in the design process, you will come to realize that without a solid, well though out design plan, the overall project is doomed. You have one chance to get it right and without Jim's professional assistance, that would likely have been the case for me. Unless you can maximize the space for functionality and appeal - assuming that's your intent, then the costs of professional design is rather inexpensive. Once the space is designed and built, you will live with it forever. Jim has the requisite experience and knowledge to deliver a great design product. He's young enough to appreciate todays' design without stepping on the historical past. I liked his blend of old and new - it fit into the neighborhood without being too different or intrusive on other 75 year old homes.
