He also called to say the job before me ran late and what time he would arrive.
I bought the knob and deadbolt sets, which all featured SmartKey, and two sets were already keyed alike. All three deadbolts had to be drilled through the door, and apparently the ancient knobs that were there had smaller holes than modern knobs, so those also had to be modified.
It was a long job, so I'm glad I hired someone to do it!
As he was drilling out the first (basement) door, he asked if I had a vacuum and I plugged in a shop vac down there.
He proceeded to go through the three doors I needed, ending with the front entrance, which needed to be rekeyed, so he showed me how to do that, even though I had done it before in my previous place, but I'm sure that would be valuable to some people. I thought the front door wasn't catching properly, and asked about it, but he said oh it had something to do with the screen door.
Because it all took so long, I think he was rushing a little at the end, and the "angies list coupon discount" was a bit of a complicated discussion, but like I said, I was glad to not attempt all of this myself.
After he left, I could not get the front door to close (latch), nor would the key work in the deadbolt so at least that part would catch. I ended up having to pry off a metal weather strip that was on the door frame, and re-key the lock with the smartkey (the first time the key evidently hadn't been fully inserted). All of the sawdust and wood chips from the drilling were also left all over the floor in all three locations (front entry hall, kitchen, and garage) so I'm not sure why I was asked for the vacuum.
So I'm glad I hired someone to do this job and it seemed to be a reasonable price, but I was also left with a lot of clean-up and tweaking afterwards. And the front door knob still doesn't latch, even with removing the weatherstrip and making adjustments to the storm door! For that price, I would have liked "perfect"... Try to get the first time slot!
Without question, my best interest was put first and all work was done reliably and efficiently. I would recommend American Locksmith to anyone.
I called Dennis, and he was very courteous and professional on the phone. He asked me what I needed, and where i was located.
He gave me an estimate, and came over within the hour.
When Dennis arrived, he explained what he was going to do and double checked what I wanted done - and gave an exact estimate.
He worked quickly and quietly, and there were no problems or surprises.
Also, he guarantees his work.
I was very pleased, and will certainly use this business again for my locksmith needs.
