Van Houten Construction

Excellent!  Other reviewers commented on the quality of the work as being very good but  pricey.  We thought that at first too, but when we compare the service, craftsmanship and the professionalism that we received from Walt and his Crew to other contractors that we've used in the past, there is no comparison.
We had a few estimates but Walt was the only one to take the time, listen to our ideas and then make suggestions on how to improve them.  He and his crew transformed a tired old bedroom into a luxurious retreat complete with a brand new wall configuration and construction of a walk in closet complete with a custom designed wooden built in closet system.
The job was completed as planned, actually better than planned.   In fact, Walt made a suggestion to enhance the lighting design, which required additional material and electrical work, and did so, at no extra cost. He also brought in the floor refinisher for us and oversaw their work which saved us from having to take time off.  The custom closet was not part of the original contract, that was proposed, designed, built and installed during the job at a very competitive price, done quickly and came out beautiful. There were a couple of very minor concerns we had but they were addressed immediately and with no hesitation.
Our overall experience was nothing but positive  and in the future, we will look no further than Van Houten Construction.

They are excellent. They showed up on time. They are very clean. They are very thorough and detail oriented. They are a little pricy.

It went extremely well...without a glitch. At all times I felt they knew exactly what they were doing. The owner, Walter, was on the job at all times actually doing the work himself with his helper. The job started when they said it would and ended when they said it would...no unexpected interferences or problems. When the owner himself is 'doing' the job you definitely get that secure feeling as a homeowner that you don't have to worry...and sure enough, I didn't have to worry.
Walter had also given me an estimate for other work I wanted done and he even came back to review that other estimate with me when I had changes I wanted to discuss. When I'm ready for that other job, Van Houten is the company I will definitely go with!

One of the plastic tubing that they installed had broke and it wasn't their fault, it broke right in the middle of the pipe, like it blew out. And we were not here, we came home to this hissing sound and when I walked downstairs it was all this water in the basement. I called him and he called this guy, and Jerry was here within an hour, replaced the pex tubing with copper pipe, walked away and never even charged me a dollar. I apologized and said it's not really his fault, it was the material and he said: "Listen, I stand behind my work." So the experience I had with Van Houten was fantastic. It was 11 o'clock in the night that I called. His pride and professionalism stood out for me. I would recommend him to anybody.

I have used several contractors over the 30 years I've owned my home, most of which were very disappointing. Once we hired Walt (the owner of the company) we no longer had concerns about any work that needed to be done on our home. Walt has performed many fixes from plumbing to electrical. He has also built significant custom cabinetry, working well with us to create exactly what we wanted and he always performs work on the schedule he has committed to.
Van Houten is the only company I will trust my home repairs to. They are not the most inexpensive alternative, but this is absolutely a case of you get what you pay for.
I highly recommend Van Houten for any need you might have.

Walter and his men were always extremely respectful to both myself and my husband and took the time to make the work work for us in the end result, instead of just getting the work done...too often the contractors seem to go into houses forgetting that there are often minor changes or alterations they could provide to make life easier for the homeowner in the long run. Making things work in the end stages was always top priority to Walter, that quality alone is priceless to find in a contractor. I would recommend this company to anyone at any time. Best experience ever, working with a contractor.

The general contractor was Walter Van Houten and he was fantastic. He and his father were the original people that built our house. They were on time and clean. His subcontractors are all very, very nice people. I also had roofing work and new ductwork done. They put on a new deck. I had a lot of stuff done. It is a family owned company and they are very, very nice. His daughter works there. His assistant has worked for him for 25 years. He returned calls and showed up. He was very responsive. The price was reasonable. I got one other estimate but it was like comparing apples to oranges. The quality was perfect. He had a punch list at the end and any little thing they finished up. The owner oversaw the job himself and it was beautifully done. He is a college-educated man who does beautiful work. I would use them again in a heartbeat.

I am very pleased with them. They worked with me. They moved the whole project up to make sure my new tenants could move in on time. They cleaned up. They were on time and fair priced. They had a lot of men working and did a great clean up job. I thought it was fairly priced.
