To begin, the owner Joe P was prompt and acted in a professional manner when we met with him to discuss the job. I must admit, I did find it unusual that he gave me a price quote over the phone simply based on the square footage I provided. I insisted that we review the job site together prior to him starting, which we did. I wanted to make sure we were all on the same page. At the conclusion of our meeting he mentioned that he would not be on the job site as he was going in for surgery. He assured both my wife and me that the crew he was sending had worked with him for a number of years and that they were very good at what they did. Both my wife and I felt very comfortable with our selection for this job.
The day the job was to start the workers arrived on time and immediately started to prep the site to begin work. We reviewed the schedule for the week one last time and they began the job. Over the remainder of the week they sanded our wood floors, applied the requested finish (Golden Oak), and then applied the polyurethane (2 coats).
Toward the end of the week I was contacted by the owner and instructed that we were to pay his foreman the balance of the job immediately after the last coat of Poly was applied. I explained that I would pay him the balance only after I had time to review the job. After a lengthy phone discussion (while I was at work mind you) he finally agreed to wait. Even with that point agreed to, I received follow up phone calls from the owner regarding final payment. To stop these phone calls I agreed to drop the money off to him immediately after I had a chance to review the work (I knew he was laid up having just been through surgery).
The job completed the Friday before Labor Day weekend. I explained to Joe that I would be away (out of state) for the weekend, but that I was returning on Monday (Labor Day) and that I would drop the money off to him later that day. On my drive home on
Monday I received yet another phone call from Joe looking for his money. I reiterated that I would drop the money off later that afternoon as soon as I returned home. Once I got home I did a quick review of the job. Everything appeared to be fine, so I made the trek to drop off the money at his brother’s home since Joe would be there for a Labor Day Bar-B-Que (pretty accommodating on my part I thought).
As the weeks went on we had time to review the workmanship of this company in much greater detail. We found a wall that had been marked up with Stain (contractor paid for touch-up paint which I applied). We found the edge of our stair treads to be rough to the touch (contractor attempted to correct – Still rough). We were told that the dust from the job must have settled when the Poly was applied. It is odd that the dust only adhered itself to the edge of the tread and not the tread itself. As for the treads, you can see the parts that were sanded and those that were not. It looks like their sanding tool could not get into corners where the tread met the riser. We also found areas along the wall and by the baseboard heat where the floor was noticeably rough; nothing like the other parts of the floor which are very smooth. We did find one spot in our dining room where the sanding machine must have went too deep as you can see a noticeable mark that was left.
Time will tell how well the finish will wear. I did find out later that most companies put down three coats of poly. This company
recommended two coats.
This is our experience with this company. I honestly don’t know if the results would have been different if the owner Joe would have been on the job site. Again, it took time to identify some of these issues, but at least now, if you decide to use this company or any other company, you know what to look for. Make sure you have that discussion upfront regarding the payment timeline and give yourself enough time to review the workmanship.
Regards,
Robert D. Keller
