Very slick website, so it looked good. Called this company at least 10 times over the course of 2 months before they actually agreed to come and give an estimate on our job, which was to assess the feasibility of re-doing the main staircase in our home, either by capping the existing stair treds or possibly replacing the entire staircase. When he finally showed up, the owner was pleasant enough, but kept trying to talk us into replacing the entire staircase, a prospect that did not appeal to us. He took measurements and said he would send email an estimate for both options. Never heard from him again. I would not recommend this contractor just on the basis of his lack of responsiveness.
Description of Work: Requested an estimate on re-doing the main staircase in our home, either by capping the existing stair treds or possibly replacing the entire staircase.

Do - get several references Do - get a firm estimate on materials and labor for the job Do - demand good communication - Roger's cell phone is terrible, or maybe it was just where he was when he called. Roger does very nice work, but you may have to deal with some negatives along the way. And if you need service afterward, I hope you have better luck than I did getting it. Good luck.
Description of Work: Roger Bennett came to our house and went through all the available materials, and helped us decide on AZEK composite decking. Roger was very professional. He came with a crew and built the deck in approximately 2 weeks. They did a great job! My wife and I really liked it then, and still like it very much today. After the deck was built, Roger approached us and said the deck materials had cost him more than he anticipated - and that he was $1200 under break even. My wife and I decided to split the error with Roger, even though it was Roger's error, and we paid him an additional $600 over his estimate. This year (4 years after the deck was built) I called Roger to ask him to take a look at one of the footings - one of the corners had depressed 2-3 inches which was noticable. I had trouble getting in touch with Roger - I had to leave a message, then Roger would call back on a cell phone which had a bad connection. Roger postponed 2 appointments, and completely missed 2 others appointments without calling before to reschedule. I asked Roger for an estimate for how much the work would cost, and he never gave an estimate - I didn't know if he was going to do the work for free or charge us. I assumed he would charge us since the problem was no fault of his - the ground just settled slightly. But without gettng an estimate, and knowing Roger's previous history with us of underbidding the job, we decided to go with another company. The other company called when they said they'd call, showed up when they said they'd show up, and did the work when they said they'd do it - for the exact price they estimated. One other thing - I recommended Roger to a friend of mine who was thinking of building a deck. Roger met with my friend and his wife - they liked Roger too. But he ended up giving them a sky high estimate that they flatly turned down - the estimate was so high that I was embarrassed that I had recommended Roger to them.

Our experience with the folks at Bennett Stair Company was very positive. Roger Bennett visited us, listened to our ideas in regards to what we wanted done and was able to come up with both functional and aesthetically pleasing suggestions to meet our needs. He provided us with a detailed written estimate within a week of his visit and after discussing it with us, he scheduled the date for the actual work itself. Barret, the gentleman who arrived from Bennett Stairs, on the assigned date did a superb job. He was very neat and respectful of our home (i.e. putting drop cloths down where needed, doing any cutting/sanding outside, staining pieces at the Bennett shop, cleaning up the work area when the work was completed each day, etc...). The entire job, because of all the preparation done ahead of time by Barret and the folks at Bennett Stair Company, took a day and a half to complete. They did an excellent job of matching the additional railing in the foyer to the existing one. The railings along the stairs leading down into the basement are more solid and aesthetically pleasing than the ones they replaced (additional ones were added). The new stairs and railings leading from the house into the garage are very sturdy and will last for years to come. We paid exactly what Roger Bennett estimated we would. We would not hesitate to use this company again for they are expert craftsmen who obviously take great pride in their work.
Description of Work: 1. Designed and installed additional oak railing to match existing railing for stairs in foyer leading to second floor. 2. Designed and installed oak railings on both sides of stairs leading into basement. 3. Designed and installed pressure treated enclosed double stairs with railings leading from house into garage.

After re-measuring, and 2 weeks of chasing them as they were delaying our job, the advised us that the original quote was not good and they had to double the price. They were fired on the spot but we kept the temporary stairs they had provided for us. We ended up hiring Smero Construction, Greenfield Center, to make the stairs who ended up doing the job for slightly more than original quote from Bennett. All said and done, Bennett delayed the construction of our house by 2 months. They were totally unresponsive as to why the change, apologies, nothing. Guess they have more than enough business that they can afford to p*** off a few people but in this economy, they are fools.
Description of Work: While building a house, our contractor hired Bennett Stairs to build our staircases. After measuring and designing the stairs and quoting us a price, they were hired. They built us temporary stairs for the builder to use during the building process. Three months later and 1 week before stairs were to be delivered and installed, we followed up with them and they advised the stairs would not be ready and in fact, have not even been started. They needed to come to the house again to re-measure.
