The job was supposed to take 2 days, with the excavation and preperation done on the first day and the asphalt being laid on the second day. This is the normal practice for a job this size. It was agreed upon in advance in writing that they would excavate the old driveway and remove the debris, which they did. They had also agreed to regrade the slope to achive proper drainage and "saw cut" the concrete sidewalk where the driveway entered the street. This is when their customer service and attitude began to fall apart. They were about to lay the binder when I realized that the grade didn't look right so I acquired a transit and shot the elevations. They would have left me with an incorrect grade that would have drained the water into my building. They argued with me that the grade looked good to them, but were forced to concede the point when I had them look through the transit for themselves. The owner who was running the excavator became agitated and threatned to quit claiming that he was done with the grading. I now have to live with a slope of 10 inches in 130 ft which works but is minimal. They tried to break our brand new sidewalk off at one of the score marks by lifting it with their machine but it's 6 inches thick and 40 feet long, they lifted the whole thing but it still refused to break. I had to stop them from ruining my sidewalk. When asked about the saw cut they promised when we hired them, they claimed that they didn't have a saw. Being experienced in construction my son spotted a masonry saw and asked them why they couldn't use it. They responded that it had an asphalt blade in it. I purchased them a masonry saw blade for $5.00 and they finally did the job right.
