Wow get a cup of coffee for this one. For such a simple job its a wonder that the story is so complex. I'll start with what I'll end with, that the company that sold me the hot tub was significantly more professional & CHEAPER (with a warranty). This disaster started when I was approached by "Jim" regarding this patio & the instillation of a PVC privacy fence (that of course was MORE expensive than Bruce Fence Co. {a more professional establishment}). He quilted me into giving him the work saying "he was my neighbor & being a smaller contractor it would be easier to stand behind the job" (laughable, read more). Starting up the job I was immediately contacted by the Concord Pools salesman, he said that it was impossible to rationally communicate with James due to "yelling & demands". Of course I had to take my time & handle the pool company myself & when "Jim" was needed I had to drive & see over him in the store as if I had a toddler with me. Obviously he was "in the know" regarding this spa if he was demanding the specifications & unit needs. As it came the day of the pour I asked Jim if he could wait a day due to weather. Of course he said no, because he had another job the next day. This is because it poured the 3 days prior & was going to POUR THE SAME TIME HE HAD CONCRETE DELIVERED. The driver of the concrete truck said "he waited a extra 10 minutes before he filled his truck because he couldn't believe somebody would be pouring concrete in these conditions" Crainville Concrete. As the rain transitioned from showers to pouring there wasn't a proper temporary roof suspended OVER the concrete, exposing it to the impact of the torrential down pour, just a pitiful attempt to drape plastic over part of the concrete was it! James returned & as he was cursing to himself so audibly my wife was offended to the point where she went into the house, he tried to unsuccessfully "save" JB 1/rd of the patio. The following week Mr. Barry began to remodel my deck before a contract was drawn up, ordered $500 worth of paint with my Visa, & when the paint was wrong of course he had another job & disappeared again. Then a Wednesday night at approximately 850 pm I was called & ordered to meet him Thursday morning at 1040 am at a supply store, seeing that this was totally rude, unacceptable, & out of place (considering I WAS PAYING HIM), I didn't waste another day. I then told James that If he didn't logically get intouch with me I would have to take him to court. He showed up the next morning (drunk/ hungover or high) completely uninvited & or unannounced screaming that "there was nothing he could have done" (um don't do concrete work in pouring rain) & kicked my $10,000 hot tub & said "f**k myself & call the town if I had a problem". I now had to have another contractor finish the job he beeged to do & start a small claims case in Guilderland Small Claims Court. It gets interesting here because I was approached by the Judge Joe Brown Show & asked if I would go on their show to mediate my case. I agreed because I knew the show would pay his loses & I would not have to get a judgement when he lost in Town Court. In typical character he went on the show & LIED LIKE A RUG! James Barry took the opportunity to be honest & have somebody help pay for HIS MISTAKES to say "he had nothing to do with the set up of my spa" (when as described above he coordinated & tried to preform the work), "I called him to complain about a fence" (how could he respond if he never answered his phone), & lastly "he said to seal it before [I??] installed the spa" (another blatant lie). The best is when said he was a "volunteer of a housing program that I used to manage" (this program paid him tens of thousands of dollars, oh yea & he almost burned down one of my houses, RULED HIS FAULT by Albany Fire Department. Did I mention he took a oath on a Bible first, what a guy! Obviously Judge Joe Brown couldn't differentiate the truth from the lies & didn't side in my favor. Oh as a aside DON'T EVER GO ON THAT SHOW, ITS A SCAM! A appropriate end for a completely inappropriate experience. There are problems with every single job this "man" preformed in my home. A kitchenette in my basement is missing a cupboard door, there is paint on my wood work from all of his jobs, a hole in my wall where he was installing trim, a $1200 fence gate that wont close properly, the above concrete "job", & lastly he walked off the job 1/rd into the remolding of my outdoor living space. This "man" approached my wife alone in the grocery store saying "what the f**k is your husband's problem" All in all this is a feble excuse for a worker let alone anything close to a professional contractor that you would not want near your property never mind to work on your house. I hope that whoever reads can benefit from both my mistakes & honesty here, stick with larger professional companies, they grew for a reason. I'll do my best to post pictures to let his work speak for itself. A complaint has been filed with the NY AG & BBB.
Description of Work: James tried to pour & attempt to finish a level patio & set up necessary electrical needs for the spa (hot tub). THIS WAS NOT DONE SUCCESSFULLY & THE "contractor" REFUSES TO STAND BEHIND HIS WORK! He was unable to coordinate the succssful delivery of the spa, I had to drive James up to Concord Pools & spas just so he could see the "setup & layout" of the spa after his irrational behavior barred him from the establishment. The patio floods with ANY amount of precipitation (that freezes in winter) & grows mold uncontrollably. I was told the only way to remedy this situation would be to have the "work" that James attempted removed via jackhammer & dump truck, starting from scratch with a extra bill for $1500 to $2000 for the said work. So aside from screaming at his "workers" (who left cigarette butts & dangerous construction debris ALL over my lawn) & destroying $600 of concrete I have to say there is a shameful concrete slab next to my deck. UPDATE 2/2/12 James Barry REFUSED to work with New Yorks Attorney General. He continued to lie, stating he did not install my hot tub. This is a lie because he did it infront of 3 witnesses also he was banned from Concord Pools without me escorting him due to his out of controll outbursts and irrational behavior. The slab's low spots where the water pools froze, givving me a very DANGERIOUS patio, when it is below freezing. I can't emphasize enough to AVOID this sorry excuse for a man. He is a insult to the word contractor, will not stand behinde his work, and most of all tell whatever to whomever, LIKE LIES TO NY AG. UPDATE 2/19/12 As expected the stagnant/ un-drained water FREEZES despite ALL efforts. To view NY Attorney General's report call (518) 474-5481 and refer to File Number: 2012-998840. This picture is of frozen water after said patio was swept three times!
