He was hard to get a hold of the entire time, but our lawyer for the house closing had known his family for years and said they were all great roofers. I originally got his name and number from his Uncle Walt, who is my friend's slate roofer. Due to the size of our job, Walt could not complete the work on our roof so Peter called us to start the estimate process. We eventually got the estimate for the roof and he was adequate at $3500.00, which would have been 80-100 slate, new copper flashing, chimney repair and repointing and copper nails. We gave him $1500.00 on December 30th 2010 and he was to set up the scaffolding on Monday the 3rd and start work on Tuesday the 4th. He called Tuesday to say that the scaffolding was set up and he was just going to drive to pick up the materials and start work on Wednesday the 5th. He asked to be let into the house so that he could look at a couple of locations in the attic again. We called Wednesday(5th) and Thursday(6th) and Friday(7th) and Monday(10th) and left messages several times. I wound up going to his place of business which is a brick residential house on Broad St in Albany, NY to contact him. Spoke with a roofer who was sitting outside his house and asked where Peter was and the man said he was probably at his cousin's in Rensselaer. I got the address of the cousin and went there as well. Peter was not at either location and so I called our lawyer. Our lawyer was appalled and said he would call Peter and if unable to contact him but Tuesday morning(11th) he recommended that we call the police. We wound up calling the police on Tuesday the 11th, and the officer called Peter and left a message informing Peter that he should call him back. As the officer was leaving he received a callback from Peter. The officer put Peter on speakerphone and Peter promised up and down that he had the materials and he would be there on Thursday(13th) to start work. I asked that he drop the materials off at the house Tuesday evening and he said he would, but he was in Ravena right now dealing with a watermain break at his brother's and if we could just wait a little bit? We said yes, and that evening we called him again twice and no answer, and again on Wednesday(12th) and twice more Thursday(13th) morning before receiving a text message from Peter saying he would be at the house at noon. I arrived at the house at noon and was there for 8 hours without Peter showing his face. I decided that we just purchased the scaffolding he had set up outside the house and had my husband and a couple of friends dismantle it and put it in the basement. The scaffolding was also a danger to local kids because I feared them climbing it, and there was easy access to a second floor window with the scaffolding, so I didn't want a break-in. We called again on Friday(14th) several times and then again 3 times on Monday(17th) before firing his voicemail. He has not been back to claim his scaffolding and has made no contact with either my husband or I.
Description of Work: I had gotten an estimate from Peter to repair the slate roof on my house. I paid $1500 of a $3500 estimate for him to buy materials and start work on the 3rd of January 2011.
