I called Paul Reed Company one year after he serviced my generator to- again- service (not repair) my generator. There was no rush to have him come to my home. I basically told him it could be at his leasure but that I was phoning him for the annual service. After he completed the work on my generator, he added $140.00 for travel time and twenty dollars for gas. He also charged me for 2.5 hours of labor. He was not at my home for 2.5 hours!!!!! When I asked him about the travel fee, he said because I did not ask about the travel fee during the estimate he did not mention it. I asked him why it was an additional fee for travel when that charge was not on my previous year's bill, he replied, ?Lady get in the real world things have changed since last year.? I told him: "You have a duty, albeit $140.00, $25.00, or $5.00 to tell the consumers that you would add these charges. He said- No I do not! I then said- "I assumed the charge would be relative to what I paid last year." He then replied, "Lady what is the first part of the word " assumed." I was so flabergasted at his obstinence that I responded, "Maryland Lawyer." He said "I thought you were a teacher." I said, "Oh I do that too; I am a Maryland lawyer residing in NY but I teach constitutional law and criminal law." The total bill was for $265.35. He charged me for two and half hours travel time and an additional $20 for gas. He said this was because I was his only service call for the day. He also explained if there were any additional calls that day he would have divided the fee by that number. My travel time would have been reduced accordingly. When he left my home I called him to continue the discussion. He begrudgedly agreed to reimburse me $70 after basically screaming "Lady, what do you want???" I did receive his check two weeks later for $70.00 and successfully cashed it. Prior to receiving the check I filed a small claims action in the local Albany small claims court just to protect myself. He was rude. Last year he was not rude but this year he was very unprofessional.
