My wife and I hired Denney in August 2021 to remodel our three-level Lake Tahoe townhome. His schedule was reasonable - 12 weeks, but the price was a little bit expensive considering that it did not not include HVAC and cabinets. Contrary to California law, he wanted $32,000 down payment. He wanted to be paid on a weekly basis. In October 2021, he wanted $50,000 for electrical and plumbing - that we paid. In November 2021, he said that forced air heating would cost an extra $42,600 in addition to the original estimate and wanted another $50,000. While in our presence, he got a call from the window installer and he was very unprofessional, rude and hung up on him. He told us that window installation was going to be $7,550. When we called the window installer to apologize for Denney's behavior, we found out that the true cost was $5,090. That is when we realized that he is inflating numbers and untruthworthy. With the completion deadline fast approaching, demo is still not being done and nothing has been inspected, the reason he gave that he lost a week during fires and my wife was keep changing things. In reality, the only thing we changed was the heating system. Even though we paid him as a general contractor, we had to find our own cabinet maker and HVAC installer. Both HVAC and cabinets were done properly and on time. When we compared pictures taken in December 2021 and January 2022, there was absolutely no work done. Even no work is being done, he was begging for money that we refused. In January 2022, he stopped returning calls, texts and emails and communications became very difficult. When finally got a hold of him, he gave a new finish date of February 15, 2022 because he lost a month, due to fires, covid and snow. However, fries were over before the start date, and covid/snow were after his original contractual finish date. He was lying about ordering finishing materials and hot water tank. February 20202 passed by with no work being done, no updates, no commutations. We told him that April 1, 2022 was the dead drop date, and he replied that we were unrealistic. The final straw came in March 2022, when we gave him a week notice that we wanted to meet with him for an update. He informed that he had a doctors appointment and would not be there. Surprisingly, he showed up around 1 PM, and my wife and I wanted to talk to him. He said he had no time for us and walked away. At this time, we fired him on the spot and gave him ten minutes to remove his equipment from the house. At 6 month into the project, we paid him over $140,000 and demo was still not done, only footings and reinforcements for a small extension were inspected by the city He did not pay either plumbing or electric subcontractors. As a result, there is a mechanical lean against our property and we are going to court. He is unknowledgeable when comes to construction. He promised a large open area at entry when supporting poles needed to be installed for the powder room above. He could not read plans, people came over to tell him how to reinforce the foundation. His work was done with poor quality, it needed to be redone to pass city inspection.
