The work was done quickly and was very professional. No issues with the delivery of the product.
II do question the business practices deployed by Gurr Roofing. Gurr originally quoted me $1,500 to remove and replace these tiles. I thought this was pretty high, but was moving and needed to get the work completed. The $1,500 estimate was based on $80 per hour plus materials - so approximately 2 full days of work plus materials. As reflected in the scope of work, this was approximately 4 feet X 10 feet of tile in 2 locations.
When the roofer showed up to remove the tiles, he was very quick and efficient. He spent ~2 hours at my home. I was working from home, and was keen to track the time given the original quote and how the roofer would spend 8+ hours removing tiles. Similarly, when the stucco work was completed, the roofer returned, and spent another 2 hours replacing the tiles. All work done satisfactorily.
The invoice showed up with a revised cost of ~$750 dollars. I asked Gurr to provide a detailed invoice of time and material, given I knew there was 4 hours of time, and the invoice reflects something much greater than what I anticipated. I shared with the owner my concerns about the invoice - and that I had clocked in his roofer at 4 hours of labor (which include the roofer taking breaks and eating in his truck).
The owner did get back to me and said there was a mistake, and the invoice should have been for 3 hours to remove, and 3 hours to replace the tiles, with a revised invoice of $550. I asked Gurr to justify charging me an additional 30% uplift for time/labor, and was told I was being charged for and quot;travel timeand quot; of the roofer. I have never been charged this by any other contractor, repairman, etc. I told John my expectations is that this is built into his labor rates - and unless he is paying his roofer $80 per hour ($165K a year), this is where the overhead should be supported.
In the subsequent mails, his office provided more justification with the following statement:
and quot;This job was actually discounted to the point that John did not filter in his time or business profit which would include truck expense, insurance, licenses, etc.and quot;
Gurr's quote was for and quot;time and materialsand quot;, not a line item approach for fuel, depreciation, etc. This subsequent justification feels like their attempt to validate a 'thumb on the scale' approach to billing - and in any other profession constitutes fraud. I understand that this represents only $160 dollars, but is a 30% premium to my bill with little tangible justification as to why I would pay this incremental cost.
This may be a business practice of Gurr to estimate very high, then when the invoice shows up less than the original estimate everyone feels like they got a great deal - I happened to be at home that week and tracked the time and know exactly when the roofer showed up, and when he left.
Regardless of the quality of the product delivered (I have no issues with the final result and workmanship of the roofer), I would never use this contractor again based on the business practices deployed, and the level of distrust in the billing and reconciliation process
