It was one of the worst projects we have ever had done in any of our homes, and once the damage was done, we were treated very unfairly by the owner.
As this home improvement-gone-terribly-wrong, occurred in July 2015, I wanted to wait until my anger was down and I recovered from the manual work I had to do as a result of allowing this company into our home. The price for all three fireplaces was to be $1630.00, with 50% of that paid as a deposit. The company allowed an unsupervised, untrained employee to come into our house and spray black paint into the living room fireplace without a plastic tent, vent, or the covering of furniture, art work, draperies, window shade, carpet, and 1,000 square feet of marble flooring. Soot and black paint, migrated as far as the kitchen and upstairs, as evidenced by the blackened air filters that had just been replaced. I did not let him paint the other two fireplaces.
When the salesperson, Lee, came over after the fact, he said that SSS was a large company, that they didn't want unhappy customers and that they would do right by me. He also said, almost in the same sentence, that the company would no longer do this work in occupied homes, and he was sorry I was the guinea pig, while he also said they've done hundreds of these jobs without a problem.
I'm 65 years old, and I worked over 20 hours, over the weekend, scraping black paint off my marble and travertine floors with a razorblade. Two days after the damage was done, I realized the magnitude of the damage and that my house would never be the same again. Lee gave me the name of an emergency restoration number, but when I spoke to the person who would estimate the work needed to be done, he said that the chemicals used on draperies, upholstery, etc., usually damaged the fabric in the cleaning process. Instead, I used tradespeople I trusted to help knockdown the paint/soot on the floors, pot shelves, mirrors and carpets. I figured I would have to detail every item in the main rooms to remove the overspray, wash or paint every wall, and replace, or live with the ash color that is now permanently on my shades and draperies.
Lee and the worker who caused the damage returned at some point to put the fire glass in the fireplaces and to reinstall the screens and doors that were painted off-site in a "controlled environment." At that point, or shortly after, I noticed the wrong color glass in the master bedroom fireplace. When offered the opportunity to have the glass replaced, I declined as I had just paid to have the soot/dirt cleaned out of the carpet in the master bedroom in front of the fireplace.
After logging in another 20 hours of cleaning (the paint had gone through the kitchen when the back door was opened to try to vent the toxic paint fumes), I asked that I get my deposit back, and that SSS reimburse me for the $665 I spent getting help cleaning up the damage. I didn't feel that I should have to pay for anything considering the extent of the permanent damage. In addition to the damage, they didn't complete the job didn't get the glass correct in one fireplace.
According to Lee, the owner decided that he would credit us the balance of $815.00. Instead of the job costing $1630, it wound up costing me $1460, wasn't done right, wasn't completed, and my property sustained permanent damage.
I regret ever seeing this company on Angie's List, and was disappointed to see that SSS recently did the same work in someone else's home (black paint), apparently without a problem.
Note: I reviewed this business and job through an e-mail sent to me by Angie's List a few days ago. As I have not seen it or others posted, I am resubmitting a version again.
