I have had multiple traumatic experiences with this provider. Jay Sommers provided my anti-anxiety medication for years; when I received my dread diagnosis and was trying to learn more about it, he accused me of trying to turn him into a counselor (I had another counselor for years, which was documented, paid for out of my own pocket) and it was so upsetting I never returned to him. When my counselor was out of state for extended periods of time, I tried to continue counseling with one of their therapists (short, balding, glasses, I think, middle age) who refused to review my medical records and then diagnosed me with things I did not have, which - had I believed him - would have required medication that would have added to my underlying serious dread disease symptoms and likely added further disability and even death. This was malpractice. Because we were getting nowhere and it was costing me money, I finally filed a HIPAA request and obtained my records by him, sent them to the other counselelor who advised me to "run, not walk to the nearest exit". I tried later to get grief counseling for my husband, which was a chore in itself to get him to agree to go, and then we were both verbally abused and mistreated on the first visit by the therapist (W. Charleston office, female, late 50's, reddish brown hair, glasses, reeked of perfume) and her behavior was so abberant that she even accused my husband and I in front of a full waiting room of not having insurance to pay for them (which provably I did). It was strange - some people should not be counselors. My husband, an honorable and outstanding citizen in every way, wants nothing more to do with that facility. When I needed a refill of my one medication, Dr. Nguyen stated he was uncomfortable being tape recorded (due to the nature of my disabilities, I record everything - even the famous Dr. Mehmet Oz recommends that people record at their health care providers' offices). Because my recording was a lawful need under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), I told him his feelings were not my concern. He tried to keep me after the appointment to educate his staff in some way about their mandatory need to comply with federal law, but I declined, of course. How awful that the staff doesn't even know their lawful duties, especially with regard to people with disabilties who can be harmed by their lack of knowledge. My insurer agreed to pay for a neuro-psych evaluation for me based on my underlying disease, but I found that although Harmony required me to meet with them about it, they were completely useless in helping accomplish this task -- ADA interference by Dr. Willard (see report by me on her). When I finally reported all this to their CEO Allan Flagg, he apologized and told me I was free to go elsewhere. There is no indication that he plans to train his staff regarding mandatory ADA compliance, or to take any issues to correct the other aberrant behavior. I maintain a copy of his e-mail response. I have seen 4 providers and have had painful and unnecessary interactions with each of them. This facility is substandard in my opinion, and their people are not well trained -- I ADVISE ANYBODY GOING THERE TO CARRY A MICROCHIP RECORDING DEVICE SO AS TO PROTECT YOURSELF AGAINST ABUSES (in that you can fairly and reaonably prove your side -- after all, they are mental health care providers and can put any old diagnosis whether true or false in your records, and that will follow you forever), If you're going to go there or your insurance requires you to go there (ours in the beginning paid zero benefits if I didn't use Harmony), please protect yourself. Order copies of your records. Get second opinions. If you have disabilities and they object to complying with your disability needs, get it documented and report them for non-compliance to the U.S. Department of Justice, ADA Division.
