"Thank you [Member Name Removed]. We are very happy you love your pool. As always, give us a call if you have any questions."
I first met with Ace from Artistic Pool & Spa to get a bid on putting in a pool and spa as well as retaining wall and paver patio. I initially designed a few sketches of what I wanted to do with the design of the yard. Ace and I reviewed my sketches and he didn't try to change the look and feel that I was going for. He talked through the pros and cons of the design and how he felt it could set up better. He told me that he would put together a few designs for me to review and work out some costs associated to the designs. About a week later he came back to show me the different options. He kept my design in place but moved a few things around like pool equipment and spa. Those adjustments made the design better and also kept cost down (shortened gas line run by over 100ft). He gave me a base price which was already using upgraded equipment and materials and costs for some additional upgrades like in-floor cleaning, saltwater system, LED lights, pebble-tech, solar heating. I decided to add a few options but majority of the items I wanted were already included. He estimated approx. 2.5 months for everything to be completed. It seems like a long time but there was a huge amount of work that needed to be done. Keep in mind that the lot size is .25 acres with a 20 foot berm that spanned 135 feet and over 1,800 sqft of pavers were being installed. Plus I only had a 10 foot opening on the side of the house to get equipment in and out.
Once the construction phase started the project moved along very quickly. The pool was dug and hill shaved back which happened within a week. Luckily we only hit a little hard soil that needed jackhammering but we discussed that additional cost before they started. After the steel and plumbing was installed the project stopped. After talking to Ace he mentioned that the city/county inspectors were backed up more than the normal amount of time. A week and a half later everything was approved and ready to go with the exception of adding additional steel to a retaining wall which needed per the inspector but not needed per the structural engineer. It was added and the wall was re inspected. The project was back moving at full speed. The next issue we ran into was the paver selection, due to the company/manufacturer (not Artistic) doubled the paver cost from their initial quote. Ace and team were on it, looking for options that would keep me in the quoted price range and that we would be happy with. We were lucky to find some new pavers and color combos that Pavestone introduced to market. We ended up selecting multiple colors from that product line that the installers mixed and installed to perfection.
I asked for the completion of the pool to be put on hold for 2.5 weeks so my landscapers (family friends for over 15 years) could come in and lay rock and plant trees and plants. Artistic installed the pool and hardscape. I didn't want rocks rolling down the hill during installation to fall into the freshly plastered pool and cause damage. I also didn't want the landscapers to drive a bobcat full of rock over the new paver walkways which will be installed in the only area we have for equipment to enter the yard. Ace and the team at Artistic were happy to stop work and agreed that this was the right thing to do to avoid the possibility of damage to paver walkways and pool which would be costly to fix. After bringing in over 60 tons of dirt and rock and planting over 120 plants, Ace and team got back to work to finishing the plaster, getting water into the pool, and equipment up and running.
The project ended up taking approx. 3.5 months. Yes it went over by a month but I cause significant delays with the landscaping and a few changes by adding additional gas and electrical run to a future outdoor kitchen. I was extremely happy with the work that Artistic did and how Ace kept me up to date on the progress of the project. Ace personally came by the house the oversee every step of the build and even to show me all the features and resolve any issues I had with getting to pool up and running. He is still available to answer any questions I have even though the job was completed a few months ago. I would recommend Artistic Pool & Spa to anyone looking at putting in a pool and spa. Great service and quality product.
Their designer Dan sold us on the idea that while we would admittedly pay more for Artistic, we would get the best designed pool done quicker than any other company in town, because they only use specific subcontractors for each step and have great relationships. As we are about to pass the date by which we were promised to have a completed pool, we have dealt with delays on every single step after the dig, whether it be plumbing, steel, gunite, tiling, coping, and now decking and plaster.
Every single time he has told us when a scheduled step would be taking place, there has been a delay - when contractors then don't show up we have to call him to find out they were rescheduled for another day (and then he blames "the girls in the office" for not communicating to him). We were told Gunite would be scheduled for the end of May, only to be told on May 31st that they actually can't come until June 10th (and again, this is not Dan's fault because the vendor didn't tell him they were so busy).
The tile selection is where everything started to go really south. Dan told us that the tile we picked was $1-$2 more per square foot than standard, but that the owner Ron will pick that up for us because of the delays up to that point. Except then two days later he says the tile is actually more expensive than that and we have to pay for it after all. Dan tries to backtrack and say that he only said the owner "might" cover it, but in separate conversations that is not what he said to either my wife or me. He then tries to blame the owner, so I say fine let me talk to him.
This is when the call with Ron happens, and before even talking about the tile he tells us that the pavers that had been scoped for the deck around the hot tub are not available anywhere in the valley. I try to set that aside and change the subject to the tile issue, and Ron starts accusing me of calling him a liar about the pavers not being available and literally starts shouting at me and threatening to never let my pool be finished! I have to be the one to calm him down and tell him we were talking about something Dan had said about tile, not the paver issue at all. He then tells me this was the tile vendor's fault for quoting us a price. I tell him Dan actually quoted us the price and he says yes it's Dan's fault too. I try to explain that when his vendor and his employee make a mistake the cost can't fall on the customer (seems pretty basic).
Miraculously, the next day Ron calls my wife to tell her that the pavers actually are available, and that yes the tile would be covered by him. But then three days later we receive an invoice from Dan for the extra cost on the tile. We tell Dan to have Ron call us but that we were under the impression the tile was covered. He never calls. The tile gets installed and we don't hear anything else. Ron tells us that after the coping was done last week that the decking would be done yesterday.
When we followed up with a call today to find out where the contractors for the decking were, Ron again started cursing and berating my wife and threatened again to leave the hole in the ground and never let our pool be finished!
These people are emotionally unstable, unethical and are now essentially extorting us and holding our pool hostage. We have paid them 75% of the cost of the pool already and now my wife is in tears believing that these people are going to make good on their threats to never let our pool be finished. We are forced to take legal action but in the meantime I want to make sure that anyone else thinking about working with them understands the risks involved.
Beware!!
Pros: Great pool design, quality workmanship, personable staff, timely delivery
Cons: a small amount of confusing communication
In March 2015, we called artistic to bid on our new pool. Their representative measured our yard and came back with a proposal and artist renderings of what it might look like. We really like the design of the pool, and added the spa and an additional water feature. They answered our questions and worked hard to get our business. We signed a contract and initial deposit. They then went and obtained the necessary permits for the job. Construction began a few weeks later. Once construction began, the project moved along at a good pace ? there were only a few days of nothing going on between project phases. When the project was done, their project manager did an extra orientation with me since I was on a business trip when the job was finished, which I really appreciated.
If there were a way their service could be improved, it would be to focus a bit more on project communications. We found at times we were unclear when a phase was completed and when we had to pay (we focused on paying promptly so our project would proceed as smoothly as possible) and when the next round of work would begin. Most of these were solved with phone calls and email to our satisfaction, but a weekly status report or notifications when things were done would have been helpful and probably saved time in the long run.
Overall we felt that Artistic did a great job and if we ever build another pool, would absolutely work with them again.
