Dr. Terry Muratore is a very experienced veterinarian who is friendly and professional and knowa how to provide the proper care and treatment for his patients. My dog broke one of his nails on the evening of March 16th and started bleeding. I called the clinic the following day and the front desk staff was kind enough to squeeze me in that morning.
Dr. Muratore explained to me in detail the treatment that he will be implementing and the possible future effects of this injury (possibility of nail not growing back, nail growing back but not in its original condition, etc.). He treated my dog with antibiotics and fully bandaged the injured foot, assuring me that everything will be fine. I had to take my dog back to the clinic after 4days since this little brat of mine would not allow me to remove his bandages. Again, the front office staff accommodated me and had one of their techs remove the bandage. Dr. Muratore also was kind enough to re-examine my dog (even though I did not have an appointment) and clear him from any further treatment. All these were done at no extra charge.
I highly recommend Dr. Muratore and Legacy Animal Hospital. They are not the cheapest, but their prices are fair and reasonable. Experience does come at a price. After getting incompetent treatment from 3 different previous vets (one of which is literally 5 minutes away from where I live), I will entrust the health and well-being of my three dogs to Dr. Muratore and his staff. His knowledge and experience are there for us to take advantage of.
"I have attempted to submit a complete response to this review but for some reason it gets lost. In summary: We have treated this persons animals since 1997, significantly longer than the 4 years mentioned. We have treated this particular pet since 2002. This pet was discharged to the husband the same day as the procedure. This pet DID NOT DIE under our care and was actually brought to at least one or more veterinarians in the days following the procedure for evaluation. Medical records have been kept for all 10 of her pets for a minimum of 7 years, as required by state law. This particular pet's records were examined by the Nevada State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and found to be in accordance with the standards of practice. It is unfortunate that challenges like this arise from communication problems between parties but our goal is, and has always been the health, comfort and well being of all of our patients. We continue to wish the best for all of the pets owned by this family."
"[member name removed], We always strive to offer the best and latest in veterinary care and I am am sorry if our service did not meetup to your expectations. Unfortunately the majority of challenges are related to simple misunderstandings and therefore I feel it necessary to clear up some points which may have been confusing. Your kitty has a condition treated by steroids and I offered to try an injection to alleviate the signs rather that you having to administer a pill every day. I never said it would last for 6 months but rather stated that in some patients the effects of the injection have lasted that long. I have been in practice for over 32 years and have learned that there is NEVER any guarantees when it comes to medicine. I also mentioned that there is another medication which has shown to stimulate the immune system in a way that you may no longer have to administer steroids. I mentioned that this medication is relatively expensive and may be considered as an alternative in the future if current treatment modalities begin to be ineffective. I have never attempted to upsell anything in my entire career and apologize if it seemed that way to you. Our primary concern has always been the health and well being of each and every patient and we continue to wish the best for [member name removed]. Again I apologize for any misunderstandings and hope that Otis has many more happy years of life with you. Dr. Muratore"
Dr. Muratore gave our dog the standard treatment for renal failure. He hospitalized her and put her on an IV drip saline solution for 2-3 days. Her blood test results improved dramatically, but it only lasted for a week. So, we brought her back and he hospitalized her again for one day, putting her on an IV drip. There was a slight improvement in her blood test results again, but not as much as the first time. None of this was surprising, based on what we had been told by other vets who had basically given us no hope for our dog. After the 2nd hospitalization, Dr. Muratore gave me 2 bags of saline solution (Lactated Ringers) to administer to her at home. We got into a routine of giving her 200 ML of saline at home every day, subcutaneously, (underneath her skin) for the rest of her life, which lasted for another two months. Administering the saline solution at home was not as difficult as I thought it would be.
He also sold us a case (12 cans) of prescription dog food (Purina) for dogs with kidney failure. He also sold us a bottle of Epakatin which is a powder that you add to the dog food. It's supposed to absorb phosphorus which reduces the burden on the kidney. The problem with the food he sold us is that it was beyond the expiration date. The food had expired in 12/2013. They sold it to us in 02/2014, two months after it expired. In addition, the Epakatin had no expiration date at all on the bottle, so it was impossible to determine whether or not it had expired. When I returned the food and the Epakatin to Legacy, I assumed there would be no difficulty getting a refund. However, the receptionist told me she had to clear it with Dr. Muratore before she could give me a refund for the expired food that they sold me. I thought this was outrageous. As far as I was concerned, this was a no brainer. If you sell expired food, you should refund the money without question. They told me that Dr. Muratore wanted to meet with me first, before they processed the refund. So, I had to wait in the office until he could see me. It was just a waste of my time.
After about 15-20 minutes, they put my wife and I in a room in the back, and then Dr. Muratore came in. One of the first things he said was that he had read my recent review of his practice on the internet. Apparently, someone had published a negative review, and he assumed it was me. It wasn't. I was in the midst of trying to save my dog's life, so the last thing I was thinking about was publishing a review of his practice. At that point, I could care less about reviewing his practice. I didn't have the time or the energy to think about it. It really annoyed me that he seemed to care more about his review than about the health of my dog. He refunded the money for the expired dog food and gave me a new (unexpired) bottle of Epakatin. They couldn't replace the Purina kidney food because all of the cans they had in the office were expired. So I had to buy it somewhere else.
I gave Legacy an overall "C" evaluation because they are nothing special, in my opinion. They run a sloppy office as evidenced by their failure to keep track of expiration dates on the food and medication that they sell to their patients. In addition, when I first brought my dog in I asked Dr, Muratore for an estimate of how much the hospitalization would cost. He deferred to his office staff. He told me they handle the pricing and billing. When I asked his office staff for an estimate, they told me they would have to speak with Dr. Muratore about it. So, it seems as if the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. It's a very poorly run office.
I should mention that there is another vet who works there. Her name is Dr. Sue Costa, and she received rave reviews on Angies List. I never saw her. The only doctor I saw was Dr. Muratore.
So, you can take it for what it's worth. This was our experience. I don't blame them for the death of my dog. My dog was going to die from this condition at some point. I do blame them for the sloppy way they run their office, and their excessive concern about "reviews" of their practice. The medical treatment they provided was "competent" (except for the expired food and medication), but it was nothing special. They are average, at best.
I arrived on time, was greeted promptly, ask to fill out to some paperwork. They updated my pets microchip info (without having to ask). My Dog was calm for the most part, which was great for me filling out paperwork, but I thought it odd that he was being so good here, and was going crazy at the last place, the reason was soon to be realized. I was ask to bring him back, they weighted him (went well) and then we entered an exam room. I could hear music in the background, I though that this might be the reason, the calming effect on my dog....? The lady (sorry I don't remember your name) dropped to her knees and greeted my dog, my dog loves social interaction with people. She continued this, doing the prelim stuff prior to the doctor coming in, and at no time did my dog go crazy, she put him at ease with her attention. She left and only minutes later the doctor walks in. She introduces her self as Susie, not as Dr. Costa, but Susie, this put me at ease, and then immediately dropped down and interacted with my dog, and again, he is calm, having a great time (at the Vet).
Dr. Costa (Susie) and her staff are true professionals, craftsman of the trade. Going to the Vet is stressful enough for an owner, but its ten fold for the pet, and that just wasn't the case here. My dog was calm and happy, which made me calm, the attention they should my dog spoke volumes to me about what great service is, and that it still exists in this town.
While this was only my first visit, it was also my first impression, and its 5-Star all across the board. Without a doubt, Dr. Costa and her staff are the only professionals that will treat my dog in the future. I highly recommend them, Labrador Approved!
